Legislator protests in Jammu against police excesses

Jammu, Feb 23 (IANS): Independent legislator Engineer Rashid on Tuesday staged a peaceful sit-in outside the civil secretariat in Jammu against the alleged excesses of the police against protesting members of the Gujjar community in Samba district.

Engineer Rashid, member of the legislative assembly from Kashmir's Langate constituency, on Tuesday sat on protest along with about two dozen supporters in Jammu city.

"We sat on a peaceful 'Dharna' (sit-in) outside the civil secretariat in Jammu for nearly an hour," Engineer Rashid told IANS.

"After that we were proceeding to Vijaypur area when police stopped us and said we would not be permitted to go there," he said.

Muhammad Yaqoob, a protestor, was killed in Monday's clashes between the police and the protestors in Sarore area of Jammu district.

Protestors had torched an earth-mover machine and blocked the Jammu-Pathankot highway for a short while during Monday's protests.
