Sikh American actor barred from flight for refusing to remove turban

Washington, Feb 9 (IANS): Sikh American actor and designer Waris Ahluwalia says he was barred from boarding a flight home to New York from Mexico because he refused to remove his turban during a security check.

Ahluwalia, according to the New York Times, said Monday he checked in at the Aeroméxico counter at Mexico City's international airport about 5:30 a.m. and was given his first-class boarding pass with a code that he said meant he needed secondary security screening.

When he showed up at the gate to board Flight 408 to New York City, Ahluwalia said, attendants told him he needed to step aside and wait for other passengers to board.

After they did, his feet and bag were searched and swabbed, he was told to remove a sweatshirt and he was patted down. Then, he said, he was asked to take off his turban.

"I responded matter-of-factly that I won't be taking off my turban," he was quoted as saying in an interview from the airport in Mexico City. "And then they talked amongst themselves and they said, 'O.K., then you are not getting on the flight.'"

He said he was told by another airline security official that he would not be boarding any other Aeroméxico flight until he met their security demands.

"It is a symbol of my faith," Ahluwalia said, explaining why he would not remove the turban. "It is something that I wear whenever I am in public."

A statement released by the airline Monday said that Ahluwalia's screening was in compliance with Transportation Security Administration protocol and that the airline had offered him alternatives to "reach his destination as soon as possible."

Ahluwalia, 41, who grew up in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, is an actor and a designer based in Manhattan known for his House of Waris jewellery line and other design work.

One Bishop of a leading Christian denomination from India told me that he had to remove his black headgear every time while boarding the plane from the U.S. While eating with him, he took off that and showed me his shaven head and said with a laughter, the lady saw his shaven head, then the lady confessed before the Bishop with
a contrite spirit for pardon. The Bishop replied, you didn't do any sin to be pardoned.

Now due to the high security reasons, we will be forced to yield to the demand of the security people.

Turban has a thickness that cannot be scanned easily by a hand held scanning device unless the Turban is removed and put in a tray.
It is nuisance to bargain religious freedom when you fly a passenger plane.
We all know that the first AIR India from Toronto was knocked down by people who had Turban.
So what is wrong if Mexico guys suspect on him.

Now all the countries more worried about their national security due to terrorism. So the people have to co-operate and keep aside their typical religion belief (any religion). The world is changing, so the people have to change. If anyone don't want to co-operate, they can stay at home and no need to go anywhere.

Once in Indian airport security people asked some lady to take out all the ornaments and put in tray and pass the security gate.... She refused to take out her marriage ring and then she traveled by bus. Same way this Sikh American would have crossed Mexico American border by bus instead of Airplane. Why to politicizing the news??????

Hope your comments are not biased..yes one shouldn't have problem when security at risk..but more than Turban, there is huge hue & cry over BURKHA/Face viel all over the world..even very recently in kerala some gone to court & protested voilently while Govt said no face veil while attending competitive exams..there is also a case in court where some contested that they are not going to remove face veil while taking photo for voter ID/AADAHR card!!..very recently All India Muslim board said Indian courts should back off from Muslim personal law..then you are creating law inside a law, state inside a state..what is secularism then? YOGA communal, AYURVEDA communal, MANU smriti has dracinised law but i will give excuse for my practice saying religious sentiment & its forbidden!!..when we debate over temple sanctum entry ban as gender bias, why its taboo to talk about Durga entry ban or prayer hall entry ban..let us talk about all issue with every section of scoiety, then only true secularism will prevail

on 9th Feb 2016 Two heroic Sikh men have broken religious protocol by removing their turbans to help save four men from drowning.
If on security reason if Sikh American is barred from flight that what is the problem?? Even in India they will ask to enter some religious places than they will not allow you, if you are in foreign attire.

Also, one Sikh religious follower took off his turban and used that to stop the bleeding of a boy who was in an accident in Australia.
He said to the whole world that his turban is very important for him but the life of a bleeding person is more important than the religious conviction.

This is why we call Pappu supporters as Mahha Pappus, because they expect Indain Diplomacy to work on a American citizen, that too in Mexico.

No wonder why scamgress wants illiterate India to ponder on their votes.

Why should Indian diplomacy intervene here? There’s no question of diplomacy intervening in security issues. Even in Europe conservative burka clad women are thoroughly checked inside security cabins. As a matter of fact, all are expected to co-operate if they want to travel.
