Gujarat riots convict detained for punching journo during an interview

Ahmedabad, Jan 21 (HT): A convict in the 2002 Gujarat riots case was detained by the police on Thursday for allegedly punching and slapping a woman journalist during an interview.

The incident occurred in Ahmedabad the previous day, when journalist Revati Laul went to meet Naroda Patiya massacre convict Suresh Chhara at his residence for an interview. “Fifteen minutes into the interview at his residence in Naroda Patiya, Suresh lurched forward and started punching and slapping me without any provocation. He banged my head against a wall,” alleged Laul.

“I managed to escape with the help of his son and neighbours,” Laul said, adding that she has developed a blood clot in one of her eyes and suffered bruises on her ankle.

Formerly a journalist with NDTV, Laul is writing a book on convicts in the 2002 riots case. She has been residing in Ahmedabad for over a year now.

Laul said she was treated at a government hospital, after which she lodged a complaint of assault against Chhara with at the local police station. The convict was detained for questioning the next day.

The journalist has reportedly been meeting Chhara, his wife and son for a year now, and this visit was part of an ongoing interview she had been conducting for her book.

Chhara is currently out on parole for six months. Last year, his wife had accused him of marital rape and unnatural sex.

As many as 32 people were convicted in the Naroda Patiya case, which concerns the lynching of 97 people. Chhara was convicted of rape and murder.

I feel this is another book which she is writing for congress to battle against Modi in 2019 elections.

Congress has been tryig hard by things like these Raise Guj riots again n again, stop parliament from working, stop reforms happening, fabricate protests against unnecessary issues, and totally stop development and bring negative image in peoples mind.

It should not be a surprise if congress protests again in next parliament session saying dalits are not safe.

    God help India and Modi.

@Yash: God help india, Yes!!! u r right...

During modi regime, India’s Resources feeding only the super rich. And weu want god to help modi, Lol.

Do, you know the crude oil price for today?? Its 27$/ Barrel. In 2004 when the petrol price was close to Rs.40, Oil was around $25-30/barrel. When Oil went in to $115 in 2011 petrol did not goto 160, When Oil went to $145 in 2008 petrol did not goto 195. MODI Govt instead of favouring the consumers by reducing prices of petrol, he is helping petroleum companies make huge profits. We are now seeing the true colour of chaiwala, Rich are becoming richer and the poor becoming poorer under chaiwala’s rule.. . . none of the election promise has been fulfilled by him.
And you are telling let God help him. Don’t blindly support him. Innocent blood spots of Gujarat Riot Victims will haunt u.

if the convict slaps then also can play victimhood and still earn trp..

prestitutes really.. they don't have time to interview any war hero.. but they know where their bread comes from. cheap people

anything with Gujarat riot sells even after a decade and some cheap media knows it well to come to limelight. Either speak to victim or speak with convict and take a selfi... otherwise what was the need to interview a convict? expect him to fall on the feet? sure shot prime time news even though it does not deserve 10s of our valuable time...

    @Rajesh,

Your response to my view itself is a reflection of intolerance beyond doubt....,

Further, let me enlighten you with an irony..., in line with your response by making you recall & introspect the BJP's behaviour(of course in my opinion they are shameless to say the least) after its INDIA SHINING campaign fell flat in 2004 & 2009 ..., probably i believe you realise yourself that you lose your locus standie to express any views one way or the other.

    Jai Ho...!!!

Man convicted for mass murder and lynching out of prison so soon and not reformed. He should be sent back permanently. Anything can happen in Gujarat. Perhaps he is a CM candidate.
