Bangalore, Sep 7: Praveen Shintre, an alleged serial killer, was shot dead by police at his residence in Belgaum hours after his arrest on Wednesday night.

Shintre, wanted in 38 criminal cases, including several murders and two rapes, was arrested by a special police team in Udupi and was brought to Belgaum, police said on Thursday.

When the accused was taken to his rented accommodation on Wednesday night, he took out a gun and opened fire at the accompanying police personnel, they said.

Police said that inspector Nagaraj, who escaped the shot, retaliated by opening fire, killing Shintre on the spot.

Belgaum, Spe 7: Praveen Shintre, the notorious contract killer was the third gangster of the Belgaum underworld who was encountered by the police.

Sanjay Nesarikar was the first gangster encountered at an open field near Kittur. Nesarikar and his henchmen had murdered Munnasingh Potiwal and Gajanan Hiroji with swords right in front of Nesarikar’s house at Hattiholli Galli in Shahapur on July 23, 2001.

Potiwal and Hiroji were gang members of Sunthakar, the arch rival of Nesarikar. After the murders, Nesarikar took shelter with Bangalore don Fayaz alias Koli Fayaz who was also known as Murgi Fayaz.

After failing to nab the culprits, in their ‘B’ summary, the police declared him as absconding. The court proclaimed Nesarikar an offender and instructed the police to attach his property.

Nesarikar who had family at Hattiholli galli surrendered before the Belgaum police. Police who had ‘nabbed’ Nesarikar in Bangalore, killed him on their way to Belgaum soon after entering the jurisdiction of the district.

Nesarikar, according to police was shot dead when he tried to flee when he was attending nature’s call in an open field at Kittur. Inspectors P G Wandkar and I A Patil were the encounter officers.

Fayaz had made surrender Nesarikar on condition of helping him obtain bail from the court. Another Bangalore don Christopar Chakravarthi alias Chakre and his gang members had attended the last rites of Nesarikar.

Gangster Raju Kanbarkar who was wanted in several cases of murders, attempt to murders and cases of looting, was encountered in the wee hours of July 16, 2005.

Kanbarkar who had his own gang was caught on the previous day of his arrest. Court had extended his police custody for a few more days to complete interrogation. Kanbarkar died in a hail of bullets as he tried to flee in an autorickshaw behind HUDCO Colony near Gangwadi.

Suresh Manchekar the aide of Dawood Ibrahim who was hiding in the city for a few years was encountered at Kagal the border village of Maharashtra by Kolhapur police on August 14, 2003.

The Bijapur police encountered Ambaji Piragouda, henchmen of contract killer Chandappa Harijan at Shiraguppi village of Athani taluk on January 5, 1991.
