US official lauds protests against Kalburgi murder

New Delhi, Jan 14 (DHNS): A senior US official on Wednesday lauded the protests by authors and artistes against the murder of rationalist and Kannada scholar M M Kalburgi and cited the instance of the lynching of Mohammad Akhlaq at Dadri in Uttar Pradesh to drive home the point that silence could embolden perpetrators of such crimes.

Delivering a lecture at Vivekananda International Foundation in New Delhi, Sarah B Sewall, US Under Secretary of State for Civilian Security, Democracy and Human Rights, noted that the governments around the world must ensure that all people had the freedom to peacefully speak, organise and worship.

“But,” she added, “ensuring these freedoms calls for more than just enforcing laws, it means proactively speaking out – as both public officials and private citizens – to challenge calls for hatred and violence. Silence can embolden the criminal and the cruel – as in the lynching of a Muslim man last September or the burning of churches in Odisha.” Akhlaq was lynched by a mob at Bisara village near Dadri in Uttar Pradesh on September 28 after it was rumoured that he and his family had killed a cow and consumed beef on the occasion of Eid-ul-Adha. She also referred to the murder of Kalburgi at Dharwad in Karnataka on August 30 last and noted that he was the third rationalist to be murdered in recent years.

“When extremists murdered Malleshappa Kalburgi last August to silence his critical views – the third such murder in as many years – the Indian literary and artistic community was among the first to condemn the act,” said Sewall, who is currently on a tour of India. She was obviously referring to the killing of Narendra Dabholkar and Govind Pansare – at Pune in August 2013 and Kolhapur in Maharashtra in February 2015, respectively.

Over 30 authors returned their Sahitya Akademi award in September and October last year to protest the killing of Kalburgi, Dabholkar and Pansare as well as the lynching of Akhlaq. Several other artistes too returned their awards to protest what they perceived as “growing intolerance” in the country.“These examples of family and community-level interventions may help explain why so few Indians have joined ISIL’s (Islamic State) ranks thus far. But that is not reason for complacency; it is a call to give local leaders a greater role in pushing back against violent extremism in their communities,” said the US diplomat. “Governments can help by ending stifling regulations and allowing citizen groups to peacefully speak and organise around sensitive topics,” she said.

“Learning from the past, we must avoid the trap of invoking security to justify bigotry, profiling, and discrimination against any religious or ethnic group – including our Muslim brothers and sisters.”

what does it mean..? R you suggesting a one more division(god forbid) of Hindustan as congi / non-congi, secular / non-secular etc.,.

    Dear GIRISH.
Do you think congress is allowing him to do anything?
Best example is just finished parliament session.
Case was filed against Mrs. Sonia Gandhi and co. by a private party. But what congress did? Disturbed the parliament just because of their own use & to stop pass some bills. Even Juvenile act was passed only after anger of Public. Out of 9 bill 8 bill was put on dustbin without discussion.

This is what congress is doing. Stopping development work, so that in next election they can campaign against current govt.
They made whole world to discuss about PMs foreign trip, what their VP did????
They made whole Indians to ask question about Modis suit, do you know the cost of T shirt which Mr. Rahul wear while he gave speak in front of Bangalore students??
2 weeks before congress VP told Make in India is not working and all congress leader supported him, couple of days before CM told Make in India is working again same leaders supported for his statement. If it is working why congress is misleading citizen by telling it is not working?
When PM started talks with Pakistan all starts blaming him saying Pakistan is terrorist country. but when congress leaders seeks help from them to come back to power no one questions them.
When Bullet train awarded people ask why not to Mangalore.
When Motor cycle taxi started in Bangalore why no one ask for Mangalore???
When Mr. rahul went to US to attend some conference every one praised him, but when all came to know that conference was help previous month to his visit every one locked their mouth.
But no one praised who really attended.
Every one blaming then prime Minister for releasing Azar in Kandahar incident. But no one is praising it helped to release of 155 innocents.
No one talking about PDP leader released soe terrorists just for release of his daughter.
In dadri 1 man died every one returning award. In malda many died no one have time to talk?????

    @ Krish,

I patiently read your views/responses which often either begin or end up with lot of questions(that too biasedly pointing towards Congi)

While i don't want any self proclaimed patriots/nationalists to endorse my views i only wish to say the least in simple (being answer to your questions) that - "Because we are Hindustani's" and we are the only tolerant/secular country in this whole universe(Brahmanda) which is as diverse as Hindustan.

With regard to your opening remarks or initial comments, I must enlighten to draw your rightful wisdom to say that - the parliamentary form of protest which is currently being practiced by Congi in toto is inherited from BJP who richly practiced to fulfill/meet their political objectives when they were ruling Hindustan for the past many years before May' 2014.

When you expressed couple of bills find its destination to dustbin.., is nothing but your sense of negative exaggeration (I am sure you may take a second look on such remarks once you know that couple of them are pending since UPA I &/or II).

..Dont fall pray to these officials..they are clever in meddling disturrbed water..this is what they did in Afganistan,Pakistan,ME, but those didnt realised it..they talk about GODHRA but wont on MALDA..they talk about killing of a man for say eating COW but wont talk about killing of 4 men for protecting COW..let us find solution ourselves instead of inviting these people..what suggestion they can give us when they go around world meddling & creating wars,killing..for example, attack on black people(african americans) and asians are in peak in USA..police brutality on African american on rise, even children are shot at resulting in massive riots in several cities..but largely unnoticed by Indian media..in 2 years there is no attack on any religious places or prayer halls(except theft robbery) in INDIA but just google how many prayer halls, Gurudwaras attacked burned in USA in just two years..just google what action US took when a guy said he will burn book (many country faced riots, killing by this)..Freedom without responsibility dangers..tomorrow KALLADKA may write some books & say he is writer..then how many will support his freedom of expression?..just google how home grown terrorism multiplied in UK/WEST..you will suprised see connection of release of book SATANIC VERSES..is this kind of absolute freedom necessary which dangerous every one life?..US/WEST will talk both way, its in our interest to use our brain for the simple reason that US/WEST host worlds many most wanted people(politicians/writers/activist) just to use them whenever they can..

It is even more interesting one to know - what our Hindustani friends living in US say about this news now...?
After all if we recall the euphoria during Rock star fame Madison square event of our honorable PM's visit to US (never to forget few bhakt's are then shouting/jumping before the media covering the even that they are now feeling proud about Hindustan, that too while earning their daily bread in a foreign soil).
