Mangalore, Sep 2: Kerala chief minister V S Achuthanandan will inaugurate the Tulu Academy at Hosangady in Manjeshwar Taluk in Kerala here, on Monday, September 3 stated C H Kunhambu, Manjeshwar MLA told mediapersons here on Saturday, September 1.

This will indeed be a great historic moment for the five lac Tulu-speaking people in Kasargod district of Kerala. An announcement has been made by the government of Kerala that it will set up the academy in its budget in 2006-07 and accordingly has set aside Rs. 20 lac for the pupose.

At the inaugural function a cultural programme ‘Tulu Utsav’ will follow the inaugural session along with Tulu Drama ‘Kayyurr’ and Yakshagana ‘Koti Channiah’. Kunhambu stated that the main intension of constituting the Academy is to demand the inclusion of Tulu in the 8th scheduled of the constitution. As the Tulu is the minority language in Kerala government of Kerala has taken initiative to set up the academy.

The main aim of the Academy is to collect and preserve Tulu literature, folk art and culture of the Tuluvas alongwith a study of Tulu Yakshagana drama, Daivaradhana and to set up a library with tulu literature and also conduct programmes pertaining to the same.
Kunhambu also informed press persons that the academy will function from Rashtra Kavi Govinda Pai College in Manjeshwar. Manjeshwar panchayat president V A Khadar, panchayat vice president M J Kini, Kasargod, ZP member Prabhakar Chauta and Balakrishna Shetty were present.
