Saudi Arabia severs ties with Iran: Foreign minister

Riyadh, Jan 4 (AFP): Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir has announced that Saudi Arabia was severing diplomatic ties with Iran after demonstrators stormed its Tehran embassy to protest against Riyadh's execution of a Shiite cleric.

Jubeir also said that all Iranian diplomats must leave Saudi Arabia within 48 hours.

Saudi Arabia "is breaking off diplomatic ties with Iran and requests that all members of the Iranian diplomatic mission leave... within 48 hours," he told a news conference yesterday.

On Saturday, a mob attacked the Saudi embassy in Tehran and a consulate in second city Mashhad amid protests at the execution in Saudi Arabia of Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr.

The 56-year-old, a force behind 2011 anti-government protests in eastern Saudi Arabia, was among 47 convicted men put to death on Saturday in the kingdom.

The others were Shiite activists and Sunnis who the Saudi interior ministry said were involved in Al-Qaeda attacks, with some beheaded and others shot by firing squad.
Iran arrested 44 people over the embassy assault, which President Hassan Rouhani described as "totally unjustifiable".

But the Islamic republic's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei condemned Nimr's execution, saying "God will not forgive" Saudi Arabia for putting him to death.

Jubeir responded yesterday by saying: "Iran's history is full of negative interference and hostility in Arab issues, and it is always accompanied by destruction."

Relations between Sunni-ruled Saudi Arabia and Shiite- ruled Iran have been strained for decades, with Riyadh frequently accusing Tehran of interfering in Arab affairs.

Both countries are also divided over a raft of issues, namely the nearly five-year war in Syria, where Iran is allied with the regime of embattled President Bashar al-Assad, and Yemen where a Saudi-led coalition is battling Iran-backed rebels.

@Ramesh S, few of your comments points out your lack of knowledge about world politics and in particular ME politics. Iran has the guts to stand up against the west, yes.. but why because it has Russia's back up. Iran stands up when west/Israel when there is any civilian or hamas death in Gaza/West Bank. Did it stand up when Russia crushed muslims in Chechen? Can it stand up and say that Israelis has the right to live in the land where they lived since biblical period? That is not guts but double standard. Until Iran accepts that Israel has the right to be there , they don't get respect from a civilians around the world. You wanted west to leave the ME for themselves.. yes they could have but for these reasons. Firstly if they want to take hands off from that area, Russia/Iran/Syria will take over that area. When Saddam attacked Kuwait, it was the Kuwaiti Amir who begged Bush to help him out and if US avoided that I am sure Amir of Kuwait might have gone to seek Russian help. Don't blame west but blame these very people who fight among themselves since biblical period. @S. Shetty, the US ship could do nothing because the straits of Hormuz is close to Iran and US ship was almost lone ship with no back up. Can that navy boat go near Mexican waters and do the same to a US ship??

This Iran and Saudi Arabia tension can create further flooding and oversupply of oil in the world, thus bringing down the price of oil.

Iran is in very serious financial trouble and to pay the bill, they will be forced to pump more oil. Saudi Arabia may like to punish Iran through pumping in the same level or more to punish Iran through hurting their pocket.

This situation has to be solved someway, else will create farther great destabilization both politically and economically in the middle eastern countries.

..i think west simply putting their citizens at risk by siding with ME countries..what ever be the problem, it would have been solved by now if third party didnt entered in ME..US & allies heed to their freinds request & joined the mess..But it turned into crus#de VS jih#d..In the end, the real player went into shadow and the WEST left alone as a villain bringing terror to door step..just look at the comments in DW, for whatever happening ME its either US or JEWS responsible..they never accept the reality of the whole game!!..

The Jewish people in the U.S. with their less than 2% of the population, they are controlling the U.S. and world economy. Out of the around 450 billionaires in the U.S. 25% are Jewish, and among the top ranking billionaires, Jewish people are at the top list.

They control the Federal Reserve Bank and Wall st, the financial hub of the world.

When it comes to charity, they are in front of other people in charity too. See, the charity of Mark Zuckenburgh at his young age of 31st giving away 99% of his wealth to charity. They enjoy and gifted with the fun of making wealth and using that wisely instead of wasting it for mere showcase circus to show the wealth.
Those kind of showcase minded people in the Jewish religion are very low percentage.

Like the U.S., India was very generous and courteous towards the Jews down through the centuries. Also as a very rare case, the relationship of Jewish people with the Muslims in India was highly cordial and brotherly.

Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina once said when India started deporting Bangladeshis staying illegally in India……”Let them come back….what it is there to stay” Here also let Saudi or entire GCC ban Iran one more time….but does it make any difference to Iran!!!! Stubborn Country and Stubborn people!!!! Never afraid of anyone nor they bow their head. Even country like Israel is bothered by Iran. We can remember the incident happened in “Straits of Hormuz”… A small Iranian Navy Boat with four Navy Soldiers on board make a mockery of big USA war ship when it was sailing through that area and they could do nothing!!!!
