Mangalore, Aug 30: A one-year-old child was mowed down by a speeding tipper at Ulepadi-Kanguri near Mulki here on Wednesday August 29 afternoon.
Muthappa, son of Mallappa and Sumitra couple of Belgaum was run over by tipper near the quarry where Mallappa and Sumitra work. Muthappa was sleeping when the tipper crashed him to death.
Mallappa and Sumitra were labourers in one J M D'Souza's quarry at Ulepady-Kanguri. On Wednesday Mallappa had wrapped Muthappa in swaddling clothes before making him to sleep on a sack. Since the child was wrapped up in while swaddling clothes, the tipper driver Ismail did not recognize him. It was only when the accident took place that he came to know that Muthappa was sleeping in the shade.
The tipper driver Ismail fled the place immediately after the accident fearing public fury. The Moodbidri police have registered a case in this regard.
