Eight trapped Chinese miners found alive after five days

Beijing, Dec 30 (IANS): Eight miners were found to be alive five days after their mine collapsed in China's Shandong province, authorities said on Wednesday.

The gypsum mine accident happened on Friday evening in Pingyi county. At that time, 29 people were working underground. One is confirmed dead, four escaped, and seven have been rescued so far, Xinhua reported.

Rescuers found signs of life on Wednesday morning and contacted the eight miners. They are trying to send them provisions. The owner of the mine drowned while working with the rescue team early Sunday.

The rescue has been obstructed by the structural instability of the tunnel and falling debris. Holes have been drilled into the ground so that life detectors can be lowered.
