Puttur, Aug 30: Areca growers of the region have decided to hold a rally from Sullia to Mangalore, in order to bring their problems to the notice of the government.

The rally would be undertaken from September 8 to 10. This decision was taken at a meeting held at PLD Bank auditorium in the town recently. The leaders of the co-operative sectors were present in this meeting.

Owing to flood and drought in the district, a huge part of areca crop has been lost by the growers, leading them to a critical stage even committing suicide. On the other hand, the government has not deposited any sums to the banks to compensate for the waiver of loans. Hence, the farmers are not in a position to raise any more loans. To bring all these problems to the notice of the government, the farmers have decided to hold the rally, said A Jeevan Bhandari, director, SCDCC Bank.

M N Rajendra Kumar, president of state co-operative Apex Bank will flag off the rally at Sullia on September 8. The rally will leave Puttur for on September 9. It will reach Mangalore on September 10. About 15 thousand farmers will participate in this rally, Jeevan Bhandari informed.
