Made by India: Modi to inaugurate Afghan parliament building

Kabul, Dec 20 (IANS): India’s symbolic gift for democracy in Afghanistan - its new parliament building - is almost complete with plans in the works for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit Kabul in the near future for the official inauguration, local media reported on Sunday.

The project was initiated by the Indian government in 2007 as a mark of friendship and cooperation to help rebuild war-torn Afghanistan, and is set for completion on December 31.

The new parliament building was due to have been completed in November 2011 and has missed at least three completion deadlines over the last four years.

In the latest review, conducted by India’s Secretary of Urban Development Madhusudan Prasad and the Central Public Works Department, it was found that 96 percent of the work was completed and the project team was putting final touches to the building.

The project had been conceived as a $45 million venture but was now likely to cost the exchequer $90 million, TOLONews reported.

The parliament building has elements of Mughal and modern architecture and will have Asia’s largest dome as its key feature.

It is situated between historic landmarks King’s Palace "Darulaman" and the Queen's Palace - which bear the marks of the war and tell the story of conflict and devastation.

The building will house the Wolesi Jirga (Lower House) with a seating capacity of 294, a 190-seat Meshrano Jirga (Upper House), entrance lobby, offices, conference rooms, dining halls and a press room, among others.

May I remind Modi and his bakths that charity begins at home first. India is still receiving aid from foreign countries to help the poor in India yet gives crores away to others.

Ok.. Then you did not read any comment section here when he announced softloan to Nepal or any other countries. Fine.. wait for few days till he makes one more announcement. Don't forget to check the comment section over here. Do you support giving freebies in Karnataka by Govt from tax payers money?. That too based on caste and religion. Nothing should be free but people should be paid for their honest work with out any discrimination. Why can't we think beyond God and religion when we know that thats the main cause of threat we are facing now

The most welcome development between India and Afghanistan in recent decades...

Ever since Indira Gandhi and Congress party helped the Soviet Union invasion of independent Afghans, India lost it's credibility at International level, and centuries aged Indo-Afghan friendship between the two countries suffered.

President Carter urged Mrs. Gandhi to use her influence with the Soviets to withdraw Soviet troops from Afghan soil. About a week after President Carter's plea to Indira Indian envoy defended Soviet invasion of Afghans, at the UNO and supported invasion more than Eastern Bloc Communist countries"...

Mr. Modi you are in the right direction with our neighbours.

    Great news.
The delay in completing the project and doubling of the cost is not unusual for India.

@ Bhakts... Please note, Afghan parliament building is 'Made by India', not made by FEKU.

Blindly don't just post comment saying 'Well done FEKU'!
