Congress blames Modi for dragging Sonia to court

New Delhi, Dec 19 (IANS): The Congress on Saturday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government were behind Subramanian Swamy's court case against Congress chief Sonia Gandhi on the National Herald issue.

It also said that Bharatiya Janata Party's leader Swamy was "rewarded" with Z category security and a bungalow in Lutyen's Delhi for dragging Sonia Gandhi and her son and party vice president Rahul Gandhi to court.

Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad told the media that they believe the BJP-led government and Modi were behind Swamy's complaint in court.

"You would have read in newspapers today how the government has gone out of the way to put Subramanian Swamy in Z category and allotted him official accommodation," Azad said ahead of Sonia and Rahul Gandhi's court appearance here in the National Herald case.

"The Z category status and official accommodation is a reward (to him)," Azad said.

Sonia and Rahul Gandhi will appear in Patiala House Court here on Saturday in the National Herald Case. On Swamy's complaint, the court had summoned the Gandhis, Congress treasurer Motilal Vora, general secretary Oscar Fernandes, journalist Suman Dubey and technocrat Sam Pitroda.

Hundreds of Congress workers thronged the party's central office here at 24, Akbar Road to express their solidarity with the party's top two leaders.

"The BJP, the prime minister are targeting Congress leadership but we will not be oppressed...," the Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha said.

"The way the Modi government is targeting leaders of opposition we will fight inside and outside the parliament," he added.

He said the party will fight the legal battle in the courts.
