'My daughter's name is Jyoti Singh': Nirbhaya's mother 3 years after Delhi gang-rape

New Delhi, Dec 16 (NDTV): Three years to the day a young medical student was gang-raped and tortured on a moving bus in Delhi, an incident that shook India to the core, her mother revealed her name to the world, saying: "My daughter was Jyoti Singh and I am not ashamed to name her."

At a tribute for their daughter, who died 13 days after the incident on December 16, 2012, Asha Devi and Badrinath also made a passionate appeal against the release of the youngest of the six rapists, who is about to walk out of a reform home.

"I am not ashamed of taking my daughter's name. Whoever has suffered should not hide their name. It is the offenders who should be ashamed and hide their name. I want to tell everyone that my daughter's name was Jyoti Singh. From today, everyone should know her as Jyoti Singh," Asha Devi said to big applause at a public meeting in the heart of Delhi.

Speaking on the "juvenile", who is expected to be released on December 19, she said: "On her third anniversary, the culprit is being set free. Where is the justice is in that?"

Their appeal echoed in Parliament, where actor-politician Hema Malini said the "juvenile" should be given the same punishment as the other four convicts.

"The juvenile did more harm than the others. He has a devilish mind. He will not be corrected in rehabilitation. He should be punished so that everyone fears the law of the country," Ms Malini, a BJP parliamentarian, said in the Lok Sabha.

The Centre on Monday asked the High Court to extend the observation home stay of the convict, saying it needs clarity on his rehabilitation plan.

The convict was below 18 when he and five others attacked the student and her friend. He was sentenced to three years in a reform home, a punishment seen by many as disproportionate to the enormity of the crime and spurred demands for changes in the law so teenagers involved in serious crimes can be tried as adults. Four other convicts have been sentenced to death and a fifth was found dead in prison.

3 years after this episode, my heart still grieves for Jyoti Singh. Feel ashamed that men don't respect us women, never mind respect, the violence still continues. Totally agree with Jyoti's mother and why should the victim be ashamed? It’s the criminals who should be unmasked. We don’t know how he looks and once he is out people won’t even know before he repeats his crime. What is the guarantee that he has reformed? Justice has become a joke in the country now!!!!!

As the convict has already reached 18 years of age, what is the point in hiding his name and face.
What kind of India is this? surely it is incredible, in this point.

Show who he is. So when he is released people should keep themselves away from this hardcore young child now he has become big we don't know what other criminal activities he will carry. He is a dangerous man to our society.

This is India for you. Here you will hardly find people's representatives elected to serve the people but as an career opportunity with power. These leaders are wolves in sheep clothing, so don't expect any justice, honesty and peaceful living.

    Swamy,

So what can be done to correct that? The principles on which a country is built gets corrupted eventually. Principles dont necessarily last multiple generations. So what we require is a revolution and start from a clean slate.
