SC hikes environment charge on commercial vehicles in Delhi

New Delhi, Dec 16 (IANS): The Supreme Court on Wednesday increased by 100 percent the environment compensation charge (ECC) for the commercial vehicles entering Delhi and imposed a blanket ban on the registeration of diesel vehicles of engine capacity of 2,000 cc and above in the entire National Capital Region.

The apex court bench headed by Chief Justice T.S. Thakur said that no commercial vehicle registered prior to 2005 will enter Delhi and all the taxis will have to switch over to CNG by March 31, 2016.

A 100 hundred increase in ECC would now mean that light commercial vehicles with two axles will have to pay Rs.1,400 for entering Delhi and commercial vehicles with three and four axles will have to pay Rs.2,600 for each trip for entering Delhi.
