Sonia did not want someone with independent mind as PM: Pawar

New Delhi, Dec 11 (PTI): 'Self-styled' loyalists of 10, Janpath convinced Sonia Gandhi that it would be better to back P V Narasimsha Rao in 1991 as Prime Minister over him as the "Gandhi family was not about to let someone with independent mind" to get the top post, Sharad Pawar has claimed.

The loyalists including the late Arjun Singh, himself an aspirant for the prime minister's post played a "clever trick" to convince Sonia Gandhi in the decision to choose Rao over Pawar, says the NCP President, who became Defence Minister in Rao's cabinet.

Pawar has made these claims in his book 'Life on my terms-From the Grassroots and Corridors of Power', which was formally released in the presence of a galaxy of political leaders including Gandhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the President and Vice President at a function to celebrate his 75th birth day, which is tomorrow.

He says that his name was considered for the top post in the party not only in Maharashtra but also in other states. He was personally more circumspect as he was aware that a lot depended on the inclination of 10 Janpath, where Sonia Gandhi resides.

"Though a senior leader, P V Narasimha Rao had withdrawn from mainstream politics for health reasons before the election. Given his long experience, there were suggestions to bring him back following the unforeseen exit of Rajiv," Pawar states in his book.

"Self styled loyalists of 10 Janpath started saying in private conversations that Sharad Pawar's election as prime minister would harm the First Family's interest in view of his young age.

"'Woh Lambi Race Ka Ghoda Hoga' (He will hold the reins for a very long time), they argued. Among them who played a clever trick were M L Fotedar, R K Dhawan, Arjun Singh and V George.

"They convinced Sonia Gandhi that it would be safer for her to back Narasimha Rao because he was old and not in a good shape. Arjun Singh himself aspired to become prime minister and hoped to succeed Rao soon. Anyway, once Sonia Gandhi had bought the coterie's 'bring Rao' argument in 1991, the tide turned against me," Pawar says.

Rao was ultimately chosen over Pawar who had secured a lead of over 35 votes. Later P C Alexander, a former principal secretary to Indira Gandhi and close confidant of the family, brokered a meeting between him and Rao with an offer of top three portfolios.

"He (Alexander) and I knew that I had been a strong contender but Gandhi family was not to let someone with independent mind to get to the Prime Minister's post," adds Pawar.

In another chapter, the Maratha leader, who was then Leader of the Congress in Lok Sabha, says ahead of voting on no-confidence motion against A B Vajpayee's government in 1997, he had told BSP chief Mayawati that it would be in her party's interest if she voted against the government.

In April, the AIADMK withdrew its support of 18 MPs after the Vajpayee government refused to accept the demands made by its chief J Jayalalitha.

Pawar states that the motion of no-confidence motion was put to voice vote and the Speaker declared it passed but the opposition demanded on division of votes.

"After the speaker announced division of votes, the Parliament staff took sometime to close the doors and activate the voting machinery. During those few minutes I took the BSP chief Mayawati aside and had a word with her. The BSP had five MPs and there was an intense speculation on what stand it would take.

"When the electronic machine displayed that the Vajpayee government had lost by just one vote, everyone got into a guessing game on who voted on which side. Those who had noticed me talking to Mayawati before the voting pressed me to clarify. However, I thought it prudent to keep mum. Even after so many years I am asked about what transpired between Mayawati and me.

"Well let me put this way. I just impressed upon her that BSP's interest in Uttar Pradesh would be best served if she voted against the Vajpayee government. Amen!" says Pawar.

At the last minute, the BSP had decided to vote against the government in the motion.

Comparing PV Narasimha Rao to Sharad Pawar is comparing an apple to an rotten apple. There is no comparison between PVN and Pawar. PVN was smart and able leader where as Pawar is corrupt and power hungry. It is Mr. Rao saved the country along with Mr. Man Mohan Singh. PVN had guts to say "shut up" to high command if he is right and thats the reason Congress leadership didnot allow his dead body in congress bhavan. This is the grave mistake congress did to a person who served the party from grassroots level. PVN is the best PM of Congress who came to power in difficult times and succeeded in bringing back India's credibility.

    1. PVN did not had support base within congress at that point of time. There were leaders like Arjun Singh, Sharad Pawar etc., without Sonia's backing he may not have lasted even for a day.
    2. He had the guts to say shut up to high command. Such is the interpretation of RSS, of every congress leader who RSS is forced to praise. Whether it is BR Ambedkar, Shastri, Patel etc.

If Sonia Gandhi had not supported PVN, people would have ditched congress that time itself. This is the bitter truth for Congress. Arjun Singh, Sharad Pawar are power hungry politicians. PVN was great and able leader. He was not silent like MMS being PM. MMS was forced to be silent by Sonia Gandhi and her chelas. Congress is full of chelaas of Sonia Gandhi which is harmful for democracy. At least, congress had one leader PVN who silenced his critics by his able leadership and strong decisions. Sonia Gandhi is big zero if you compare to PVN. She is congress high command only because of her surname Gandhi. Don't bring RSS into everything. People of India know who are our best PM's and who are worst PM's. We are intelligent enough to understand state of affairs of our nation. Roshan needs to go back to Indian history and better do proper homework before scribbing anything in this forum.

Ajay Lobo. That is your perception and I have mine. Sonia's contribution you claim as big zero, but got the congress back to power, which gave growth rate of over 8 percent. Pulling a family together itself gets horrible, pulling a party together is art of brilliance. Like it or not Gandhi Fly brings the unity within congress, that is why they are most hated by RSS.

I know the history and the facts both. If you said, AICC made a sacrilege, like Rashmi said, in her comments, I would have agreed and appreciated with you. It is a unacceptable error and horrible. But, not the rest.

Roshan..if Sonia had that much charishma, then why she got only 44 seats this time??? Please don't talk about Sonia and Gandhi family. MMS was made as puppet PM so that Sonia and her chelas get money out of corruption. If MMS was given full authority, Congress would have been in power now as there would not have been corruption to this extent. One thing is sure. Congress honours only those who say "Yes Madam" even though she is wrong. This is the reason for downfall. And you talk about Congress coming to power. It's not congress alone my friend. It's coalition government. In many states, Congress is out of power and Karnataka is also going to be out of Congress hand due to various blunders like unnecessary Tipu Jayanti. Where is congress high command to look at these blunders?

Sonia has done wonderful job in many ways for the country. It is truly smart to get PVN Rao, as PM and one should admit the smartness of PVN to appoint Dr. MMS as finance minister. They got the country out from a mess created by BJP. One should not forget Yashwant singh mortgaged tons and tons of gold with IMF.

BJP never worked for the country. When there was economic crisis and congress was trying to get back the country to economic poweress, Advani and BJP invented Rath yathra and Babri Demolition, to push the country down. These are the guys who preach these days on patriotism.

Since 2004 the attack was personal and insulting. Puppet, waitress, Pappu, looters are all BJP's contribution as the country was progressing with over 8percent GDP growth. All the scams both BJP, Arnab Goswami, Anna, Bedi talked about are dead now. After coming to power, if Modi and BJP, recovered 1.76lakh crore, 1.86lakh crore etc. what they claimed as looted, BJP would have got some credibility. Anyway, it proved itself to why Sardar Patel banned RSS, the parental organization of BJP. It is high time, BJP/RSS, reinvent itself.

Not just against USD, if you check the trends, Rupee has become weaker against all those currencies that you have mentioned in 5 years and this weakness is steepest in the last year and a half! The main reason is our exports, with the exception of beef have dipped sharply and imports have shot up (even though oil prices have hit the rock bottom)during this period.
On the domestic front, prices of essential commodities aren't very encouraging either.
