Sullia, Aug 20: A 25-year-old housewife was battered to death by unknown miscreants in her house at Atyadka near Dodderi in Ajjavar here on Saturday August 18 night.  Though police have not yet been arrest the murderers, sources said that five persons have been taken into custody for interrogation in this regard.

Rekha alias Jayshree (25), wife of Vithal, a rickshaw driver was found murdered in her house on Saturday night.  She had breathed her last owing to heavy blow on her head.  Police suspect that she had been hit on her head with a wooden club which resulted in her death.  At the time of the murder, Vithal was not in the house and Rekha was alone with her one-and-half-year-old mentally-challenged child Mithun.

Vithal after finishing daily work was in a petty shop with his friends around 8.30 pm on Saturday when an unknown person called him on his mobile and said that his wife had been murdered.  He immediately rushed home, only to find the dead body of his wife.  Reports said that her neighbours had seen her fetching water from a nearby well around 8 pm and Vithal received the call at 8.30.  This clearly indicates that she had been killed between 8 to 8.30 pm.

Vithal, son of Vasu Naik, a forest guard had married Rekha a couple of years ago.  She was her relative and theirs was a love marriage.  There was strong oppose to their marriage from Vithal's family.  Accordingly soon after the marriage Vithal had made his separate house and was living in it with Rekha.

So far nothing has been known about the murderers.  But Vithal had received the call from a coin booth (no 230047) which is close to APMC here.  The unknown voice had said that he, along with Vithal's father (Rekha's father-in-law) and brother-in-law had killed Rekha.

Based on this information Vithal's brother-in-law (sister's husband) Chandrashekhar Naik who is also the vice-president of Sullia CA Bank, Vithal's father Vasu Naik and 3 more persons have been taken into custody. Puttur ASP Dr Harsha too visited the spot later.

Sniffer dogs which were summoned to the spot are said to have given some hints about the murderers.  The sniffer dog after coming from the house went and stopped near a garage at Odabai via Dodderi temple and hanging bridge at Dodderi.

It is quite sure that robbing is not the motive behind the murder as all the money and gold ornaments are safe in the cupboard though it was open.  Police are interrogating the case.
