Myanmar sends back 48 boat people to Bangladesh

Nay Pyi Taw, Dec 3 (IANS): Myanmar authorities repatriated 48 more verified Bangladeshi boat people back to their country, the media reported on Thursday.

Myanmar immigration officials in Maungdaw district handed them over to the Bangladesh Border Guard force on Wednesday, Xinhua news agency reported.

Myanmar has repatriated a total of 777 verified Bangladeshi boat people in seven batches so far.

According to the foreign affairs ministry, the remaining boat people are being investigated and they will be handed over to their countries of origin when the verification process is completed.

Myanmar navy rescued over 200 boat people in Rakhine state's Maungtaw and over 700 in Ayeyawaddy region's Pyapon in May.

Investigations by the Myanmar government found that some of the boat people had fallen victim to human trafficking rings and crime syndicates after receiving illegal work offers in Thailand and Malaysia.
