In BJP-ruled Gujarat, Congress makes gains in civic polls

Updated

Ahmedabad, Dec 2 (NDTV): The BJP continues to dominate urban Gujarat, but the opposition Congress is ecstatic at having made significant inroads in rural areas of the state in civic election results announced today.

The Congress has won 22 of 31 district panchayats, a massive improvement over the one panchayat it had won in 2010. It has also won more than 50 per cent of the state's 231 taluka or block-level panchayats.

The civic elections were seen as an important test for Chief Minister Anandiben Patel - handpicked by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to replace him after he moved to the Centre last year - and she will take heart from her party, the BJP's performance in urban areas. The BJP has won all six municipal corporations including Ahmedabad and Surat, facing tough competition from the Congress only in Rajkot.

The BJP has also won more than 40 of the 56 municipalities where elections were held, including Viramgam, the home-town of 22-year-old politician Hardik Patel, who is leading an agitation for reservation in government jobs and colleges for the wealthy and influential Patels or Paatidars, long seen as a BJP support base.

Hardik Patel and others had appealed to the community to vote against the BJP for rejecting their demand for reservation, but that seems to have had little impact in areas like Ahmedabad and Surat.

"Its a sweet bitter result for us. But Im am happy that the hard work of our party leaders in urban areas has paid off. We will analyse what went wrong in rural areas and try to improve our performance next time," said Chief Minister Anandiben Patel after she visited the party office in Ahmedabad.

The Congress has linked the hope of revival handed to it today to the elections due in the state in 2017. Its leaders point out that not only has it won in rural areas, but has also bettered its performance in some urban centres.

"In 105 assembly segments we have made an impact and our candidates have won in 70 per cent of the seats from Umargaon to Ambaji," said Gujarat Congress president, Bharatsinh Solanki.

The Congress has had spectator status in Gujarat for many years now as the BJP consolidated its position at every level in the state. In the last assembly elections, it had won 115 of the 182 seats and swept all 26 Lok Sabha seats in the national election last year.

In the 6 Corporations BJP is leading.

In the Municipalities, Congress is leading in recapturing the seats, 6 in 2010 has changed to 9 now. In the Panchayat, Congress is leading very heavily beating the BJP.

At the end, tabulate the votes and see, how much in the ballot numbers for the BJP when compared with the former election at the paradise of the Modiji empire, then rejoice!

It is totally impossible for Modiji to stand alone, they will pull his leg too fast.

India has to categorize those organizations as terrorist organizations.

The Gujarat election result will be putting the last nail at the BJP Government. In the next national election, BJP will be turning like the world communism. How terribly they used the great Hindu religion as a political spade card? Now reaping the terrible consequences.

Problems with BJP is they don't know how to make happy their vote bank. Patel Community asking for reservation and despite having a Government of BJP at state & centre, BJP is hesitating to make them happy. Make sure you have a strong foundation ,then only you can build home or else it can fell down at any time.
Irony is all the people need solutions for their problems only during BJP rule, be it OROP or reservation etc...
Finally it's time to get rid of the reservation in India.

PM is more on foreign soil than his own homeland. No more can he fool the people except a few handful of cheddi bhakts.

The electorate all across India could read the hand writing, if BJP is ruling India, that will be the end of democracy and a terrible march towards theocratic autocracy.

So, the BJP was kicked out starting from the Capital New Delhi, went to Bihar and did some other clean up jobs in places like Varanasi the very own constituency of Mr. Modi, finally flew to the holy land of BJP, the very own Gujarat State of Modiji and Amith Shaw, the pilot and co-pilot.
