Kundapur, Aug 18: The fishermen of the region were on leave from June 15 to August 10 under the instructions from the State Government of Karnataka.

But fishing being the main occupation, the Gangolly fishermen could no longer remain at home and have decided to launch their mechanically operated fishing boats on Wednesday August 22.

About 25% of the fishermen are busy getting their boats, nets and other accessories repaired. It is but pertinent to report here that more than 20,000 fishermen from Kundapur and Byndoor blocks of MLA constituency have made the Gangolly Port their main center for fishing activities.

The monsoon fishing activity had lasted only for 10-15 days. Now they could not help setting their boats afloat even if the sea was not in their favour.

Of late the fishing job is losing its charm among the younger generation. This is borne out by the evidence that the number of fishing boats have drastically reduced to half of its strength.
