Nitish announces liquor ban in Bihar from April 1

Patna, Nov 26, 2015, (IANS) Bihar will go dry from April 1, 2016, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar announced on Thursday.

The chief minister made the announcement -- a part of his election pledge -- at an official function to mark Prohibition Day here.

He said the poorest of the poor had been consuming liquor, badly hitting their families and their children's education.

Increasing liquor consumption was also a major cause for domestic violence, particularly against women, and had contributed to a rise in crimes.

"Women are suffering more than anyone else due to increasing liquor consumption," he said.

An official at the chief minister's office said Nitish Kumar took the decision after a high-level meeting with officials here.

In July, Nitish Kumar had declared that prohibition would be imposed if he retained power in the assembly elections.

Bihar Excise and Prohibition Minister Abdul Jalil Mastan had earlier said that the state government would soon take steps to impose a liquor ban.

Bharatiya Janata Party leader Sushil Kumar Modi on Wednesday vowed to support a liquor ban.

The decision is expected to derail the government's financial health.

The excise department went into an overdrive in 2007 following a new policy and started issuing licences for marketing liquor across the state.

The revenue collection of excise department registered a more than 10-fold jump, from Rs.319 crore in 2005-06 to Rs.3,650 crore in 2014-15.

    It is not a necessity.
Illicit liquor may be available, but there will be scarcity due to ban. It will help many addicts to give up drinking if not all.

    Good joke !

Prohibition is in full force in Gujarat State. (Liquor comes in from Daman and Diu). Yet every brand of alcohol is available through agents and door delivered. Who gets the kickbacks ( which party )in Gujarat is not investigated.

Likewise it will be the same in Bihar. The recent elections have emptied the coffers of Nitesh and Lallu.

For your information....Liquor is banned in Gujarath long time ago. But if you go and stay in a hotel and just ask the boy there whether its available..immediately question will come form that side.."Which brand you want..?". you believe it or not, Gujarat is a highest alcohol consuming state after Kerala.

Alcohol has more evil than good. It has ruined many families. Initially it would be hard to accept but gradually it's positive effect can be noticed.

Your comparison of Liquor ban to Beaf and terming it intolerance is showing your immaturity in wisdom and moral ethics.

Beaf is consumed as a food to survive but Liquor on the other end for amateur/fanciers (shaukeen) of whose repercussion are too bad.

This was part of CM's election pledge and he has acted accordingly.People have elected him taking into consideration all the election pledges. This is a stepping stone to reduce violence's in the state. This decision is taken after a high level meeting with officials also supported by BJP leader. What is our Problem? Every CM takes decision best suited to his State to create a peaceful, non-violent atmosphere. What is banned in one state need not be banned in another. The CM has taken bold decision in the best interest of the people of his state.
