Online intolerance: Kerala journo faces threats for writing about madrasa child abuse

Thiruvananthapuram, Nov 26 (Agencies) : A journalist in Kerala has come under a fierce attack on social media and even her profile has been deactivated by Facebook. Her 'crime': she recounted on Facebook the sexual abuses her classmates encountered in their younger days in a madrasa.

Kozhikode-based VP Rajeena is a senior journalist with a prominent Malayalam newspaper.

On November 21, she wrote about the abuse on her Facebook page. And shortly afterwards, she started receiving threats online.

The detractors were so large in numbers that their move to report the profile to Facebook forced the social network to close down the page.

Rajeena, in her post, claimed to have witnessed the alleged immoral conduct of madrasa instructors.

“The abuses came in large numbers, questioning my motive at making these revelations. They pictured it as an attack on the religion. I never tried to generalise this as the behaviour of all madrasa instructors. I just shared what I experienced. But many others from the community did come out in support. A few shared with me similar experiences which they had kept as secret all these years,” The Hindu quoted Rajeena as saying.

“One of the other criticisms was on the timing of my revelations. I thought of making this public after I started hearing the opinions of conservative community organisations on the question of gender equality, related to the Feroke college issue. Muslim women here are facing denial of justice on so many levels, but they do not have a platform to raise these issues within the community. I was forced to use social networks because of this very reason. The suppressed anger of so many years might have also come out through the post,” she added.

Ironically, says Rajeena, those threatening her have on other occasions themselves spoken out against intolerance.

“In this case, their intolerance to my opinion is due to the fact that I am a woman from their community. They are scared of more women speaking out. Instead of targeting me, they should try to ensure that women from the community get justice. Being silent about issues is not the solution,” she said, as per the daily.

We must defend brave girl rajeena....She has already mentioned she didn't generalise every instructor..she just recounted a incident which happened in past.....We shouldn't defend spoilt apples so that it may get emboldened it must be nabbed in its bud.....Nobody would believe madrassa instructor would do that when they here it they are unwilling to believe it .....Remember it is fbook which freezed her account...Some months back....Gail tredwell a close aide of mata from Australia came with her book "holy hell"...on accounts of sexual assault she faced in mata's ashram...Instead of supporting her...govt of Kerala being pressurized from Mata's supporter filed case against her...and banned her book....those people who are defending this lady termed her as some agent and rallied behind her

People are afraid of truth. Do not want to get tarnished by anyone. Must understand first that all the religions have followers and those followers are human beings. Human beings are prone to commit sins. Saints are very rare.
How can you accuse others of Intolerant when you practice the same.

where is secular/intellectuals now. where is political parties. intolerance is a drama & created by them for their own benefit. if not after independence so many bomb blast/murder/rape case/communal case etc.... happened but nobody returned award & discussed about intolerance. why all of sudden it appears. definitely some people don't like the development of our country. they are interested in making money.

If sexual abuses happened on classmates or her in her younger age, why she not reported to parents or Madrasa committee?? How she remembering now? The problem is she trying to say this is happening now also in all the madrasas. She cannot brand all the madrasas are bad like Sangha Parivar. If any particular incident from any particular Madrasa, go and report to the police. Regarding threats, police should take action against the culprits.

Centre and the respective State governments must publicly condemn such acts of intolerance without fail irrespective of which religious community the offenders belong to.
Why no condemnation from 56" to every such case of intolerance ? If he condemns only now then it will be a clear case of selective condemnation based on the community the offenders belong to.
