Mangalore, August 16:  Navya Shastra, the international Hindu reform organization, awarded two inaugural awards of Recognition to Abhinanda and Praneetha, students at Bantwal College, here on the occasion of Independence Day.

The award was presented to two young girls who daringly spoke out against anachronistic social practices that still exist and harm the lives of millions of Indians.

Abhinanda invited a Dalit student to her home to watch television, risking the censure and sanction of Hindu castes.

Praneetha took a firm stand against dowry by publicly promising never to marry into a family demanding dowry.

The award consisted of cash prize of Rs 4000 for each of the students.  They were selected by Dr Bhamy Shenoy, the visionary convener of the "True Education" seminar series.
