BJP appoints Sarbananda Sonowal its Assam chief


New Delhi, Nov 21 (IANS): The BJP has appointed Minister of State for Sports and Youth Affairs Sarbananda Sonowal as its state president in Assam, which goes to the polls next year, a minister said on Saturday.

Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar said the decision was taken by Bharatiya Janata Party's national resident Amit Shah.

"BJP president Amit Shah has appointed Sonowal as president of party's Assam unit," Javadekar said at a press conference here.

Sonowal is an MP from Assam's Lakhimpur constituency.
