Let veterans prove OROP stir is not politically motivated: Parrikar

Arakkonam (TN), Nov 13 (PTI): Terming the attempts by war veterans to burn medals as an insult to the nation and armed forces, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar today said it was for protesting ex-service personnel to prove there was no political motive behind the OROP stir.

"If I say something, it will become an allegation. Let them prove that it is not political," he told reporters here when asked if he saw a political link to continuing agitation despite the government's response and notification on one rank, one pension (OROP) scheme.

"Medals are a recognition of the nation for the sacrifice done by the armed forces," he said in reply to another query.

"Burning and returning them is an insult to the nation and the defence forces," Parrikar said.

The minister's comments come in the wake of a section of the ex-service personnel expressing dissatisfaction on the ground that the OROP notification has not fully met their demands.

The government had on Saturday formally notified the OROP scheme for over 24 lakh ex-servicemen and six lakh war widows in the country.

"Medals are a recognition of bravery, for the service to the nation. It has nothing to do with service conditions whereas OROP is about service conditions. It does not say you are entitled for medals, it talks about service conditions like your pay and entitlement," Parrikar said.

On the issue of grievances of protesting ex-servicemen, he said, "Let them put the demands before the judicial committee, they will address it." He said implementing OROP was BJP's electoral promise and it had been fulfilled.

Earlier, he unveiled the first phase of the commissioning of Boeing P8i Long Range Maritime Patrol aircraft fleet at Naval Air Station "INS Rajali" here, about 85 kms from Chennai. In the next phase, four more such aircraft would be inducted making it a fleet of 12 high-tech surveillance planes.

Induction of the eighth P8i plane and completion of aircraft equipment testing, trials and crew training for all the eight aircraft marked the launch of the first phase.

The function was attended by the top defence brass, including Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral R K Dhowan, Vice Admiral Satish Soni, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief Eastern Naval Command and other senior officials from the navy as well as civil administration.

Koshyari committee report on OROP was an accepted version by all including army men, but it was not implemented by Congress and that is one of the reasons they are 44 now. When Modi promised OROP, Army men thought he would implement that version, but to their dismay and disappointment, distorted version was implemented. Unlike politicians, these veterans are a disciplined lot and they know everything clearly. When Modi distributes lakhs of crores as packages, he would have done better in this case where amount involved is about 8000 crores only.

Now war veterans say that defeating enemy was easier than convincing this govt. After promising at election, the govt has blatantly cheated the veterans. There was an accepted definition of OROP, after the commission's report. But to the dismay and disappointment of veterans, the govt has announced the version of OROP that is the distorted version by BJP. Unlike politicians, these veterans are a very disciplined lot and they know what they are up to. No doubt Congress had failed to implement, but, when Modi announces lakhs of crore packages, it is not correct to cheat these veterans, who have protected the nation.

Dear Yash, I agree with you something is fishy. I am surprised that OROP was cancelled during Indira Gandhi rule and so many years passed noise made during past years was not that loud as it is made now, or may be now camera and Mic have been turned towards them so that every one get to know about it. With due respect to my beloved soldiers, no one should politicize.

Announcing a lakh crore packages for Bihar and Kashmir and pretending that 8000 to 10000 crores is difficult for OROP is the biggest insult to all the sacrifices made by the Armed Forces since Independence. How is the OROP stir now being considered politically motivated if the Govt and particularly the Prime Minister cannot fulfill the pledge they have made time and again to the nation that ONE RANK ONE PENSION will be implemented and see what they have announced ONE RANK FIVE PENSIONS.Once Trust is Lost the everything is Lost.

    Exactly...
This somewhere puts question a in our mind if all the intolerance protest and OROP protest is political motivated. Is it put to pressure on Modi govt ? obviously, Modi is growing popular in international level and if they let him grow like that the Congress or any opposition for that matter cannot grow.
So all these protest are politically motivated and just to put question on people mind that Modi govt is inefficient.
