Mangalore, Aug 4: The ‘Sanskritika Saurabha’ programme was organised by the Department of Kannada and Culture and Sandesha Lalithakala Mahavidyalaya was inaugurated by the Ullal MLA U T Kader here, on Friday August 3.

Inaugurating the programme Kader while delivering the customery address paid homage to culture stating that culture is the foundation of the society and safeguarding the culture is the duty of every individual. If a building is demolished it can surely be built again but if the culture is lost it can never be rebuilt, he cautioned.

In Kader’s esteemed opinion “People from a particular area are identified by their culture, if this culture is lost, then the identity of the individual and the region itself is lost.” he added.

Lauding the efforts of the upholders of culture he called them as the ‘saviours of culture’ and ‘pillars of the nation’. These are a handful of people who have taken up the challenge of safeguarding the culture, not succumbing to the pressures of westernisation. Such people must be appreciated and honoured, he averred.

Kannada Sahithya Parishat district president Pradeep Kumar Kalkura presiding over the programme, expolated that it is a common complaint that people today are not fond of watching cultural or folk art. This in his opinion is a misconception, as several programmes on Yakshagana and other regional culture have always been getting overwhelming response.

He further informed that it is essential to retain culture and folk arts in its original form itself, as a fusion of the local art with other cultures could harm the local folk art. He enjoined every individual to be proud of his own culture and try to practice it in his day to day life.

Citing cases of people from Kerala, he said that everyone must learn to respect culture the way people from Kerala do. Wherever they go, whatever they may become in life they always follow their culture strictly with a great sense of pride and this is the reason that Kerala enjoys a distinct place in the country, Kader added admiringly.

Karnataka Sahithya Parishat former state president Harikrishna Punaroor, Sandesha Prathishtana Director Fr Fransis Louis and others were present.
