Although laudable, the trend is not good in the long term. It is a common knowledge that Bachelor of Science degrees are becoming obselete or that process is likely to complete if engineering biotech courses are also offered in the engineering colleges. Which means that basic sciences are taking a beating.

This also means that, in not that distant future engineering degree will be the only qualifying degree available. A most important aspect our universties and governments should consider is any steps to dilute the importance of basic sciences is extremely bad in the long run. When countries are bracing themselves to the challenge of becoming technology leaders, this current trend of too much importance to software centric engineering is going to affect us in the long run.

We must remember, the word technology associated with software is too misleading. I don't think it has sufficient fuel to take us through to the next century. Imagine what happens when Vietnam, South Africa, Indonesia and the likes cut through the share of this cheap labor centric jobs that are heading to India. And then we have Chinese (who are incidentally being trained by Indians) who are notorious for flooding world market with cheap products.

It is really good news for the people around Belthangady Taluk. SDM educational trust is pioneer in education in Dakshina Kannada District for a long time, but they did not commercialise education like others. My hearty Congratulations to Dharmadikari Dr. D. Veerendra Heggadeji, MR. VASHO VARMA AND SDM EDUCAIONAL TRUST for their restless free service in Education. Good luck
