Mangalore, Jul 23: The DK unit of Peoples’ Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) has strongly condemned the attack by some miscreants on the office of the television channel TV9 in the city on the night of July 22.

The freedom of press, of citizens and the media, guaranteed under the constitution a+nd one of the most sacrosanct rights, is under grave threat since considerable period here. This has been proved again, the last one being attack on the offices of ‘Karavali Ale’ and harassment of its director couple by booking them under frivolous charges and delay in granting of bail for nearly a fortnight, PUCL opined.

The builder mafia, religious mafia, transport mafia and the criminals’ mafia are ruling the roost. There is a virtual collapse of law and order in the district and the state of Karnataka. The authorities should initiate a high-level enquiry into the incident and ensure quick punishment to the guilty in all cases including the present attack on TV9, urged P B D’Sa, president of PUCL, in a press release.

Women Congress:

The district Women Congress has also condemned the attack on TV9 office. It opined that the district administration has failed to give proper security to the democratic struggle and media freedom.

Drug abuse and outrage on innocent women have rapidly increased in the district. Hence, the government should take proper action against all these evils, said Mamata Gatti, president of district Women Congress.
