Panaji, Jul 23: Goa government on Monday ruled out granting official language status to Konkani in Roman script.

The reply came in a written question tabled by BJP legislator Fransisco D’Souza on the floor of the house.

Demand for official language status to Konkani written in Roman script was raised by political forces including Save Goa Front and United Goans Democratic party (UGDP), who are having their legislators in the assembly.

Former congressman Churchill Alemao had left the party and formed his regional outfit, Save Goa Front, protesting against congress’ indecisive behaviour on several issues including official language status to Konkani written in roman script.

The issue had also figured during the June Two Goa polls with SGF assuring the official language status to Konkani in roman script, if voted to power.

Goa, with 14 lakh population, attained statehood on May 30, 1987 while Konkani (written in Devnagri script) was accorded official language status by state legislative assembly on February 4, 1987.

I totally disagrees with Ms.Anu's point of view, as she says she agrees with Government denying decision. If we re-track the decision taken then by the hungry powered legislators in the Assembly way back when Devnagri was made it was with multive motives for their own juicy choice with high bent biased to open Marathi BombayGate to Goa from Mahrashtra. And when you say that Regional Languages should be preserved ? As to what and where geographical situation does GOA lies? and what should Goans be preserved in this sense of view?

When Goans are more conversant with Roman script it will yields ever more knowledge to one mind to get in touch with outsideworld as such a world has become a small village on IT habitation, and I would definitely support Roman Script even as all over India Hindi Cinemascope are using Roman script for their benefiting attitude of the script etc.

And logically Roman script should have been given the right of choice initially when Devnagri has been made, and not that Marathi which is a state language of Mahrashtra. Now all these MaLAndras are raising these issues for their hefty selfish games and fool the people all the times wehn such issue comes and to disturb the peace which has been enjoyed over 500years more.Government say NO because they have designed the democracy in GOA as follows: Democracy is for the MLA, to the MLA, and by the MLA and made people as guinea pigs. Or else see the situation at present there - Peopls should come out like opinion poll has saved us our Golden GOA or elseit would have been included in Maharashtra like Saddam made kuwait its political mileage.

I stand by the government's decision not to go with the Roman script. Goa comes within the territory of India, and is a part of India. Roman script, even though it has managed to get official status worldwide, is an alien concept. When it comes to regional languages, it should be done to preserve our culture. And if it doesnt start here, its preservation in the future seems impossible.
