Panaji, Jul 23: Goa state legislative assembly on Monday congratulated UPA-left candidate Pratibha Patil for being elected as the President of India.

"She had always said that she wanted to serve the India and UPA chairperson sonia Gandhi decided that Patil was the fit woman to sit on this high post,’’ Goa chief minister Digamber Kamat said supporting the motion moved by the speaker Pratapsingh Rane.

The motion was passed unanimously on the floor of the house.

``We are proud to have such a woman on the highest post… She has glorious record of holding various posts during her career,’’ Finance minister Dayanand Narvekar said.

Majority of the legislators, who spoke on the floor of the house, recalled her Goa visit prior to the election, where she had met the UPA legislators.

``I congratulate Pratibha Patil for being the first lady president of this country and we will always stand by her to serve the nation,’’ state home minister Ravi Naik said talking on the floor of the house.

Save Goa Front legislator Churchill Alemao, congress legislators Mauvin Godinho, Manohar Asgaonkar, independent candidate Vishwajit Rane, BJP legislator Damodar Naik, NCP legislator Nilkant Halarnkar and others spoke in support of the motion.
