Denmark sets aside millions for refugees

Copenhagen, Oct 7 (IANS): The Danish government has allocated $49 million to support the country's municipalities in handling the increase of refugees.

Around $19 million will be used for expansion of the housing capacity, while the remaining $30 million have been set aside for integration of the refugees, Xinhua quoted the Danish ministry of social affairs and the interior as saying on Tuesday.

"We are in an extraordinary situation, and require a special short-term effort by the municipalities to provide housing and to get the refugees into school and jobs," said Karen Ellemann, Danish Social Affairs Minister, in an official statement.

"We will follow the development in the area. Specifically, we will look at the possibilities for further simplifying integration rules and give the general finances in the area an overhaul," she added.

Funds will be distributed to the municipalities based on their refugee quotas for 2015 and 2016.
