Udupi, Jul 11: A protest will be held on Thursday, July 12 against the move of the government to reduce the powers of Zilla Panchayat said its president B N Shankar Poojary here on Tuesday, July 10.

Addressing press persons Poojary said Zilla Panchayat should continue to be the final authority to decide on the action plan for drinking water scheme. The protesters are basically demanding that full and final authority should be given to the Zilla Panchayat to implement the chief minister’s Gram Sadak Yojana and that the 12th finance commission should not be disturbed. 

Poojary said that many developmental works has been taken over by the Zilla Panchayat. Hence it is necessary to increase the grants for the developmental work and it should be about raised to Rs 2 crores. He also said that the meeting of the State planning committee should be attended by the president of the Zilla Panchayat and the chairman of the district planning committee. 

He warned the government that if this is not taken into consideration before Thursday, July 12 a relay fast would be launched from the following day.

Zilla Panchayat members B Bhujanga Shetty and Sudhakar Kullal were present at the meet.
