Mangalore, Jul 4: "We believe that ultimately all authority on earth comes from God and we all are in conscience bound to do God’s work, ensuring the right to live with human dignity and enjoy fair justice and peace. If we fail doing this, then we fail miserably and shamefully in our duties as heads of the community," stated Bishop Aloysius Paul D’Souza of Mangalore in a memorandum submitted to Dr Subrahmaneshwar Rao, the superintendent of police of Udupi district with regard to the attack on Fr Sylvester Pereira.
He further stated that it was not possible for an outsider Ramanna Shetty to come to the hospital and assault the priest unless he had been informed about the latter’s presence either by the doctor or hospital staff. The Bishop demanded that the physician and his staff must come out with proofs that they were not involved in the incident in whatsoever way.
He further strongly condemned the heinous, unjust and partisan act of the police who have shielded the culprits and threatened to destroy and murder democracy, humanity and justice.
“They have shown themselves worse than the Ramanna Shetty, whom the government officers have shielded and protected. Rather they have indirectly shielded evil and evil-doers,” he added.
Bishop Aloysius further demanded that he wants Ramanna Shetty and his gang to be arrested under section no 307 of IPC, since while beating the priest, he was repeatedly saying that he would finish him off.
The physician of Surgeon’s Hospital should be brought to book as one of the prime abettors, and all other, abettors who supported and encouraged Ramanna Shetty should be thoroughly exposed, he said.
“We also hope that you, who exert power in the Udupi district, will give us justice in this case. We request you to do the same at the earliest and relieve us of undue fear and anxiety that our community is made to face,” he appealed to the SP.
