Indian-American academics spar over Modi visit to Silicon Valley

By Arun Kumar

Washington, Sep 4 (IANS): Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Silicon Valley, a war of words has broken out between pro and anti Modi academics of Indian descent spread over major American universities.

The first salvo was fired by over 100 professors "who engage South Asia in our research and teaching", asking US technology executives to be wary of supporting Modi's Digital India initiative when he visits Silicon Valley on Sep 27.

The other group hit back with "a counter petition against the anti-Modi statement given by some faculty of South Asian studies" on Change.org, an American website providing a petition tool backed by nonprofits and political campaigns. By Thursday evening the counter-petition accusing the anti-Modi group of lacking "the slightest respect for facts and for academic integrity" had gathered 1108 supporters.

"The allegation that Narendra Modi ought to be viewed with suspicion, if not disdain, by business leaders in Silicon Valley because of surveillance implications in the Digital India initiative seems a desperate ploy rather than any genuine concern for India," the counter petition said.

"Their attempt to invoke an admitted mistake on the part of the US government in denying Modi a visa as a 'powerful signal' is a stark case of false reasoning ...and a deplorable attempt to exhume ugly lies about Modi's attitude towards Muslims," it said.

The "allegations that somehow academic freedom is under threat in India because of administrative changes at a couple of institutions are completely belied by the reality of what Indian citizens see in their news media every day," the counter petition said.

"On the contrary, for all their talk about assaults on academic freedom, the signatories of the anti-Modi letter have never admitted that the subject of the greatest censorship and distortion in South Asian academics in recent years has been Narendra Modi," it said.

Rejecting "the faculty statement against Modi in its entirety," the pro-Modi group asked the other "to introspect, change, and for once seek to earn the trust and respect of the community in whose name they have been making a living all these years."

Responding on the Academe Blog, the anti-Modi group said "despite the intimidation and harassment we have received at this blog site and elsewhere" their numbers had swelled from 125 to 135.

The group claimed that it "did not ask Silicon Valley companies not to invest in India; we asked them to consider carefully the terms of partnership with India."

"The objective of our letter is to raise awareness and debate in Silicon Valley and elsewhere, of Mr. Modi's record on key issues related to 'Digital India,'" it said.

While "technology can unleash potent changes in society, many of them positive," the group said, it can also pose a threat to privacy that "is certainly not unique to India."

"We caution any Digital India plan to be cognizant of these risks, and to take effective, transparent steps to protect against them."

"Given the Modi administration's intolerance of dissent, its poor record on freedom of expression in general, and on freedom of religion in particular", the group asked "What does 'Digital India' look like."

Even as they raised questions about Digital India, the group in its original Aug 27 letter acknowledged that Modi, "as Prime Minister of a country that has contributed much to the growth and development of Silicon Valley industries, has the right to visit the United States, and to seek American business collaboration and partnerships with India."

This visit of Mr. Modi to the rich Indian's valley in California called the " Silicone valley" will be in a cold mood. The Indian society in Silicone valley is not in a great spirit now the academics, the Patel community, the minorities composed of Muslims-Christians-Sikhs etc are cold-hearted due to the double standard they are feeling in India now.

Besides, the Sikh community is creating another issue about the visa status and record of Mr. Modi even though he is now the PM of India now. Mr. Modi was expecting several billions in FDI from the Silicone valley.

To all Bhakths: Never in the Indian history people of Indian origin had sentiments against a visiting Indian PM in any country. Modi made history by creating anti Indian PM academics. It might sounds simple (like for many bhakths not a big a big issue) but it is just a beginning and the Indians of whole world will gradually becomes anti Modi. The silence from Modi about the corruptions from his ministers, silence about the killings of scholars from the right wing activists, silent on attack on minorities is going to get attention today or tomorrow by the world. Yet he is talking only about elections (now in Bihar) nothing about administration. Many voters who voted to BJP including myself realising now that Modi had nothing to do with Gujarat development if there is any but he was there in right place at right time. He already found that managing India is different than managing Gujarat and realised that Gujarathis are not the only people living in India. When Gujarathis from America, UK and Australia lost respect to him, who else you expect to respect him when he talks very cheap about his own country during all his tour. If anyone can gather all his speeches made abroad and listen you will surely hate that person and when you are a PM of that country, you should not insult your own country like that and it started playing now because Indians indeed are smart and you cant fool Indians forever. I was a critic of corruptions during congress but now I realised MMS managed this country better (when petrol prices were rocket high)even when he has to dance according to Sonia, Mamta, Jayalalitha, Karunanidhi, Laloo, Gowda, left parties and many more.

    Lokesh,

Your analysis has come out at the right time.
High time the Indian diaspora will come out of their ignorance and look for logical answers to our country's problems, and move forward in the right direction.

Bashing his predecessors in foreign lands, portraying himself as a savior of India will not let him fool the nations for too long.

Indians have realized , since long, that nothing tangible has materialized in India, that can lead our nation into 21st century progress.

Gujarat development, Bihar package, Achhe din, Make in India, Swachh Bharat bla bla bla has been fully exposed by truth seeking Indians world wide.

No one can fool everybody all the time.

    Jai Hind !!

@ Rai, thanks mate. So what you think I should wait for 10 more years for him to open his mouth against the corruptions that is raging in the among his ministers ( Modigate, Vyapam, appointment of non qualified people to top positions ..to name few) He could have opened his mouth and take strict action about the things happening when BJP is having absolute majority. What exactly the definition of corruption in your dictionary?? Is it only when it happens during congress rule? BJP ruled UP and did it made it Singapore? Why Modi only speaks at election rallies but not in the parliament? For your information, this is the second time I voted BJP. For third time for non congress party in Lok Sabha elections.(I voted only 56 times anyway) I did voted for that Dhanajaya Kumar who did nothing to Mangalore. Can you please answer my questions?? .

Very correct prediction. Ever in the history of India, before the visit of her PM, the people of Indian origin opened their opinion earlier like this to discredit the PM's true character. Mr. Modi's double acting is now watched by the people of Indian origin and foreigners. He will not open his mouth to talk about important national issues when urgently challenged to speak, but will be delivering political sermons of impossible paradise promise.
