Udupi, Jun 24: The Director of Barnes Sifang Agro Engineering Pvt. Ltd in Shimoga, Peter Barnes (57) was admitted to Kasturba Medical Hospital (KMC), and a rare case of beating heart surgery was performed on him, without any blood transfusion here recently.

According to a press release Peter Barnes, is a sincere follower of Jehovah's Witnesses. And the Jehovah's Witnesses urges its members not to accept blood transfusions and does not allow it to be given to their children. However Jehovah's Witnesses would like to avail of the best of health care facilities, without the use of blood transfusion. They will accept all types of non blood health care management.

In case of Barnes, an angiogram confirmed two vessel coronary artery disease of LAD & RCA by Dr Padma Kumar R, Chief Interventional Cardiologist, Kasturba Hospital.

Peter Barnes was thereafter operated by a team of cardiac surgeons headed by Dr.Sujeeth. H. Suvarna, Consultant Cardio-thoracic Surgeon, Kasturba Hospital, Manipal by using the Octopus IV Stabilizer and Starfish Suction Devise to position the heart alongwith an Intra-Coronary Shunt to by-pass the block in the Proximal LAD and Mid RCA. Thus a beating heart surgery was performed without any blood transfusion. The patient is now angina free and was discharged home a week after the surgery in a stable condition.

Dr D P Saraswat, CEO and Medical Superintendent congratulated the team of cardiac surgeons on the success of the various advanced cardiac surgeries performed by them. According to him the Kasturba Hospital, Manipal provides the best state of art facilities for cardiac care to patients.

    A beating heart surgery without the use of blood and such a speedy recovery seem quite amazing. It seems that this team of cardiac surgeons are on the right track, please keep up the good work and mabe pioneer new methods in health care!
