68 Indians detained in Washington for crossing into US illegally

Washington, Aug 16 (PTI): At least 68 Indian nationals have been taken into custody at a detention center near Seattle in the US state of Washington for allegedly crossing into the country illegally, the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) department has said.

Of them, about half were detained in the last one month while they tried to sneak illegally into the United States from across the border, said Satnam Singh Chahal, the director of US-based North American Punjabi Association (NAPA) that obtained the information from the ICE.

Most of them hail from Punjab, he said.

At present 68 Indians are in custody at its contract detention center in Tacoma, the ICE's western regional spokesperson Virginia Kice said.

While their arrest dates vary widely, majority of them were taken into custody this year and about half were arrested in the last 30 days, she said.

When undocumented immigrants move through government-run detention centers in the US, it can take months before they find out if they'll be deported or allowed to stay in the country, Chahal said.

During this long wait, many become frustrated, he said.

This is the ground reality. We the #1 hypocrites on this planet rant vehemently about being proud sons/daughters of soil, always recite Mera Bharat Mahan etc, in reality don't hesitate subjecting ourselves to any humiliation just to get away from this country and land in the promised land of US of A by hook or crook. So much for our pride and pseudo-patriotism!

    Geoffrey,

If given a chance, who wouldn't jump the ship. People do such things to better their lives. Chest thumping nationalism wont feed you.

And the other thing is that moving to a progressive countries is better than living in a country that is democratic only for a namesake. Where rights are transgressed by giving excuses of morality. We elect the leaders who have criminal cases filed against them. Police are really not bothered about controlling crime but do a fantastic job of moral policing. Our criminal justice system does`nt work. We are suppose to be a secular country but, We are one step away of being a theocracy(Eg:Beef being banned cause it offends hindus). Fascist and political thugs run amok. Violence against women is also high( I am not only talking about rapes committed, but the other acts such as Female infanticide, Domestic violence, Dowry harassment, Honor killings). Communal disharmony everywhere (Every act of violence is given a communal angle and almost protest against violence is communal in nature). Inter religious and inter caste marriages are discouraged (Just compare this to the west - how absurd would it be if blacks were not allowed to marry whites?).

    Zeitgeist,
Don't fool yourself by thinking all those things mentioned doesn't happen in US!
Even prominent lady from India was arrested in lower Manhattan just coz she exchanged hello with some black boys. Police thought that she was a dealer setting up peddlers.
Is it better than Moral policing or Racissm/communalism?

    Shankar,

''Don't fool yourself by thinking all those things mentioned doesn't happen in US!''

You have got your head buried in the sand like the rest. Blind nationalism is bad. We can only begin to take steps to improve when we accept that what we currently doing isnt right.

First note that i have not mentioned US. I have mentioned progressive countries. That includes all of the western world.

Next, you must be really deluding yourself thinking that thinks that happen here do happen all over the world. Trust me it doesnt. In western world they do give really importance to freedom and expression which are fundamental in a democracy. Is inter religion marriage a issue in western world. no. Violence against women? no ( stats of Rapes committed may be similar, but i am not pointing towards that. what about the rest, I dont hear women being burnt for not getting dowry or the abortions are carried out just because its girl).

The incident you have mentioned i have not read regarding that but, police over there do target black people because of racial bias of the police or they may be usually from impoverished neighbourhoods.
But they would never admit their racial bias openly as we may do here with religious bias or with the caste.

Zeitgeist, my emphasis is only on the hypocrisy here. Secondly, I don't think the reasons that you mentioned in your second paragraph are the motivating factors behind these 68 cases majority of which are are Punjabis (the remaining must be Gujjus), who seek illegal migration and are prepared to live lives of third class citizens on foreign soil. I reckon, it's just the mad fascination for the west.

    Geoffrey,

I know that the things i mentioned in the second para may not be the case for those people try to go to those countries.

I disagree with you that it is a mad fascination that leads these people to go to western countries. The main reason would be to go to those countries earn some money and send some back to their homes.

    Stan,
While it can agreed that politicians have vested interests in the case of Bangladeshi immigrants the two cases cannot be compared.
Bangladesh shares a common/similar history, language, border, food habits, culture etc. with India. The same cannot be said about illegal Indian immigrants to the US.
Having said this illegal immigration is still wrong and must be prevented except in the cases of extreme persecution where asylum can be considered.
