Udupi, May 23: A mentally retarded person who resorted to violence at Mahalakshminagar near Kaup here injured several persons and damaged vehicles and houses on Tuesday May 22 morning.

Shrinivas (35), son of Shambhu from Muloor has been under depression for some years now.  On Tuesday morning he went to a nearby shop and tried to lift some groceries from there.  When shopkeeper Umesh stopped him, Shrinivas attacked him with a sickle.  As a result Umesh sustained injuries.

Immediately the Kaup police were alerted about this.  But when they arrived on the spot, Shrinivas said to have bit Venkatesh Bhat and also pelted stones at another cop Satish Ballal.  He then pelted stones at the rickshaw in which police arrived.  The situation grew tough when he started pelting stones at nearby houses.

Following this more police were summoned to the place.  Even hundreds of locals gathered on the spot and tried to catch Shrinivas.  But the latter managed to slip into his house and from there started pelting stones at the outsiders.  He even damaged windows, glasses, broke doors etc. 

Finally Soori Shetty, a local with the help of police entered the house and managed to catch Shrinivas.  He was treated in Kaup PHC and was later admitted to district government hospital.
