Two women killed in Puri Rath Yatra stampede

Bhubaneswar, Jul 18 (IANS) : Two women were killed and 10 other people were injured in a stampede during the Rath Yatra in Odisha's temple city of Puri on Saturday, police said.

The stampede occurred during the pulling of the chariots of the deities -- Lord Jagannath, Balaram and Subhadra -- between the Market and Balagandi Chhaks areas.

"We came to know from hospital sources that one woman, about 65 years old, was killed while some have sustained serious injuries," Director General of Police Sanjeev Marik told IANS.

Later, police said another woman died in the incident.

The police chief said two critically injured people were taken to the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack, while the others were taken to a hospital in Puri.

Every year there is stampede in Puri Jagannath, because it is the worst managed pilgrimage centre in India, and even though it is under the Endowment dept of Odisha govt, still the actual management of the temple is in the grip of local priests'mafia and they are notorious for looting the pilgrims and forget about giving facilities to pilgrims.

Ravi Shenava you are quite right. Now a days Hindu pilgrimage centres all over North India have become very dangerous places for ordinary devotees, specially for women children and aged. Virtually there is no discipline in any of the north Indian Holy places. Better stay back at home and pray from here only as God is there in all the places and not in just north Indian Holy places, which are now captured by the merchants of death and vendors of God.
