Hema Malini's driver arrested after accident in which a child was killed

Updated

Jul 3 (NDTV):  A four-year-old child was killed when politician Hema Malini's speeding Mercedes hit a Maruti Alto in Rajasthan on Thursday evening. The driver of Hema Malini's car has been arrested this morning after a first information report or FIR was filed.

Harsh, the father of the child who died, filed the FIR against the BJP lawmaker's driver Mahesh Thakur. Speaking with great difficulty at the Jaipur hospital where he was treated for injuries to the legs and collar bone and multiple fractures Mr Harsh said he was driving the Alto, with four others of his family in it.

His other son, six-year-old, was rushed to Jaipur's SMS hospital and is undergoing treatment in the ICU, the child has fractures in both legs.

"I was taking a turn on the Dausa bypass. There was a car ahead of my car which also passed through and suddenly I don't know from where this car came in and rammed us... after that I don't know what happened," Mr Harsh recounted.

A senior police officer from Dausa, where the accident took place about 60 km from state capital Jaipur, said on Thursday night, "I am being told the Mercedes was speeding. It drove over the divider." However, he also said the driver of the Alto may not have been paying attention while entering the section of the highway where the collision took place.

Actor-turned politician Hema Malini, 66, is not seriously hurt. Photographs showed the severely crumpled front end of her luxury car and the actor holding a bloodied handkerchief as her forehead bled.

She was treated for minor injuries in a Jaipur hospital where staff said she walked in unaided and received four stitches.

"Hema has injuries above her eyes, on her back and legs. I drove her to the hospital in my car. She was in pain," Rajasthan lawmaker Shankar Lal Sharma told reporters on Thursday night.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje who, like Hema Malini belongs to the BJP, tweeted, "Deeply saddened by the news of Dausa accident. I pray for the victims. We're making all efforts to provide immediate relief and medical care."

Hema Malini represents Mathura in Parliament. She was headed from her constituency to Jaipur when the accident took place.

First of all condolence to the family of the accident victims,
Here we can't blindly say that mistake is only from Mercedes driver. What I feel is as the senior police officer said, the Alto driver might not have paid attention while entering to the highway. Middle east drivers might have already faced this kind of driving from many Indian drivers when you came back to india and drove. Here the driver entering to the highway will not even bother about the speeding vehicles instead the Highway drivers have to slowdown their vehicle in the junctions and then proceed.

1ST i'm extremely sad for the kid who lost her life.my condolences with the family.
NOW to hold someone accountable to this horrible incident.
POLICE must not be intimidated by hemas position.an impartial inquiry must be conducted & if found guilty hema must be made to pay for this.
THIS should not go the way of salmans.
UNFORTUNATELY in india its always poor driver/watchman/maid/cook end up in jail while their masters who too directly or indirectly party to the crime go scot free.

Well said Shirish Kumar. After driving for many years in Dubai, I find it extremely difficult to drive in India as nobody follows traffic rules there and if objected, give mouthful of choicest abuses!
In the present case of accident of Ayesha Bibi nee Hema Malini, her car appears to be at high speed while the other vehicle entered the highway without observing the traffic rules and the actor's car tried to avoid the accident, thus hitting the divider. Condolences to the bereaved family. May the departed soul rest in peace. Ameen

Thanks Brother Badruddin for understanding the situation & for your sensible comments.

Here in this coloum I have noticed many people talk out of subject without realising what they write.

Always depending their Political party or religion etc.

This is the main reason we Indians facing so much problems in daily life. We never bother how to improve our society.

Salman Khan, allegedly in a drunken stupor behind the wheel, after mowing down 5 footpath dwellers walked away scott free and he is just a supporter of ruling party. Hema on the other hand,an MP, wasn't behind the wheel during accident likely to garner more sympathy than the unfortunate passengers, including the deceased child in the Alto.

    RIP.

Mr. Ramakrishna, read the report again before commenting, " he said the driver of the Alto may not have been paying attention while entering the section of the highway where the collision took place."

    I am not supporting anyone.

I am sure Politicians car must be running in high speed, coz Mercedeze car drivers think other small cars are nothing .

But Police man clearly said May be the Alto car driver did not notice WHILE ENTERING THE HIGHWAY" ,

It is possible, I have experienced seerl time same situation, in India people never bother to sound horn when entering cross roads or wait & watch if any vehicle passing by on straight road. Even in curve roads where the opposite side vehicle are not visible, we have to sound horn.

But who cares in India, when we follow sincerely Traffic rules they say we are fools.

Once I questione a family car drivers for not following the traffic rules while entering the road where my car was crossing, he said "that is smartness, you should me smart to drive here" ???

Even though Rajasthan Police officer admits that Hemamalini's car was over speeding still he wants to defend this BJP MP by telling that Driver of the Alto Car may not have been paying attention on the road.
Again this is an attempt to save the driver of BJP MP Hemamalini.
Everyday one or the other misdeeds of BJP people are hitting national headlines.
