UN-led talks on Yemen on Monday


Geneva, Jun 13 (IANS): The UN-led Geneva Consultations on Yemen will begin on Monday, officials said.

The announcement was made by Ahmad Fawzi, director of information service of the UN at Geneva, on Friday, Xinhua news agency reported.

According to Fawzi, the consultations will be the first of its kind to involve the different sides of the Yemeni conflict since it began, thus marking an important step towards a settlement.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and Special Envoy for Yemen Ismail Ould Chiekh Ahmed will meet the Yemeni delegations in Geneva.

Ban will arrive in Geneva on Sunday and meet the secretary-general of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and the Group of Sixteen Ambassadors in the afternoon.

The members of the GCC are the ambassadors of China, France, Russia, Britain, the US, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands, Egypt and Turkey.
