Poll panel for stronger ties with Indonesian counterpart


New Delhi, June 12 (IANS): The Election Commission on Friday hoped to further strengthening cooperation with its Indonesian counterpart by exchanging skills and experience in conducting polls.

At a meeting with a parliamentary delegation from Indonesia, India's Chief Election Commissioner Nasim Zaidi referred to the age-old and strong ties between the two nations, particularly in political, cultural and commercial fields.

Zaidi, according to an official release, also spoke about the close cooperation between the election commissions of India and Indonesia, particularly in the framework of a Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2011 and their collaboration in the Association of Asian Election Authorities, currently chaired by India.

He expressed the commission's desire for further strengthening of the cooperation with the General Election Commission of Indonesia through exchange of experiences and skills.

The high-level parliamentary delegation from Indonesia was led by Fadli Zon, Vice Chairman of the House of Representatives.

The delegation also met Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar.
