Gurgaon doctor held for prenatal sex determination test


Gurgaon, June 12 (IANS): The owner of a diagnostic centre here was on Friday caught red-handed while performing a prenatal sex determination test, an official said.

Bhatia Diagnostic Center on Gurdwara Road has been sealed and the accused radiologist Rajiv Bhatia, 52, arrested.

Considering the skewed sex-ratio in Gurgaon, Deputy Commissioner T.L. Satyaprakash constituted a team for checking ultrasound centres in the district.

The team has been conducting raids at various ultrasound centres and checking their records.

During this campaign, the team came to know that sex determination tests were being carried out in Bhatia Diagnostic Center on Gurdwara Road in Gurgaon.

A plan was prepared to catch the culprit red handed. Accordingly, the team enlisted a pregnant woman to help them.

The woman approached the radiologist for sex determination test of the foetus; he demanded Rs.10,000 for conducting the test.

The radiologist was caught on Friday while conducting the test and the Rs. 10,000 recovered from him.

According to G.L. Singhal, project coordinator with 'Beti Bachao- Beti Padhao' project, Bhatia was convicted for the same offence in 2001 as well by a Gurgaon court, against which an appeal was pending in the Punjab and Haryana High Court in Chandigarh.
