Bucharest, June 12 (IANS): Moldovan Prime Minister Chiril Gaburici said on Friday that he has tendered his resignation from premiership, one day after he was questioned in a criminal case over alleged falsification of his high school diploma.

Speaking at a press conference in the country's capital Chisinau, Gaburici explained that he took the decision following discussions about his diploma and that he decided to make this "unprecedented move" to allow Moldova to really focus on its real problems, Xinhua news agency reported.

Gaburici on Thursday presented himself at the Prosecutor General's Office for being questioned in the criminal case instituted against him over his diploma based on which he was enrolled at the university.

The scandal around Gaburici's high school diploma broke out in April, when Moldovan media alleged that his diploma was a fake one.

A criminal investigation was soon launched, according to Interior Minister Oleg Balan.

Gaburici, 38, was sworn into office together with his coalition government on February 18, two months after the parliamentary elections.

Prior to his appointment, Gaburici had served for the Moldovan and Azeri affiliates of Swedish telecom giant TeliaSonera.
