Airport, security personnel clash at Kerala's Karipur, 1 jawan killed

Kozhikode, Jun 11, (PTI) : In a unprecedented development, a CISF jawan was killed tonight and at least three others were injured in a clash between the CISF personnel and airport authority employees at Karipur International airport here.

A dispute over a CISF personnel who insisted that an official of the fire orce department of Airport Authority of India (AAI) undergo security clearance led to a verbal duel between the two and in the ensuing melee the jawan received gunshot injuries and was killed.

Confirming the death of the CISF personnel, Kerala Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala said ADGP (North) Shankar Reddy had rushed to the spot. The Malappuram Superintendent of Police has also reached the airport and has begun talks with the CISF personnel.

Chennithala said all flights to Kozhikode airport were being diverted to Kochi.
The DGP has been asked to send more forces to the airport, he said.

Sunny Thomas, the AAI fire officer, who was in uniform, was trying to enter the airport terminal when the CISF jawan insisted that he undergo a security check.
A verbal duel between the two led to situation worsening with the jawan receiving bullet wounds and succumbing to injuries.

Sunny Thomas was injured after he was reportedly beaten up by CISF personnel.
Meanwhile, over 100 CISF personnel were on the runway, police said.

Kozhikode MP, M K Raghavan said he had contacted Home Secretary L C Goyal and the civil aviation joint secretary, seeking urgent intervention of the Centre.
"It is a war like situation prevailing at the airport," he told PTI.

"There are no flight operations. Flights are unable to land," he said and described the situation as 'grave' and 'unprecedented'.

Meanwhile, Airport Authority Employees' Union (AAEU) claimed that excessive frisking by CISF staff led to clash.

"Though it (checking) is a routine, but today when AAI personnel were entering the airport, apart from normal frisking, they were even asked to open their lunch boxes, this led to some argument and then heated exchange of words," AAEU General Secretary B S Ahlawat told PTI in Delhi.

Alleging that the firing was aimed at AAI personnel, he said AAI personnel have not shut the airport operations rather they are saving themselves from CISF personnel who have in a way occupied the airport.

There are around 150 AAI staff posted at the airport, of which 40 are with airport fire service.

Sunny Thomas said he had come to the airport to take an injured colleague to hospital when he was attacked by CISF personnel.

"I was kicked, beaten up... they threatened to shoot," he told television channels.
There used to be minor skirmishes at the airport, he said.

Meanwhile, relatives of passengers who were to arrive at the airport said they had received information that their near and dear ones had reached Nedumbassery airport at Kochi, but were unaware when they would reach home.

Why this is so difficult? am sure CISF jawans will have procedure who to who not to frisk. This must be ego problems gone wrong.
From CCTV cameras one can find the mistake and take action.
Is the fire officer excepted from frisking??

Some readers have written harsh comment against CISF Jawans due to Jawans rude behaviour at Airport..They narrated their bitter experience with security staff..Please let me tell you..even I had same rude or harsh experience at Airport..4 bottles of Ayurvedic Arishtam/Tailam were thrown into dust bin infront of me..When I pleaded with them and tried to convince them how important those bottles were,I was told to follow Airport Security rules..I got hurt and disappointed but later I realized that Security officer was right..We should not judge them by their behaviour..rude or harsh..at the end OUR SECURITY is important..they are giving importance to it..Jawans should be harsh, rude and ruthless..They are trained like that...NO ROOM FOR ANY SENTIMENTS ..

All OK but they lack education and training. India means there is Ayurveda and Thaila etc. Many people carry this and lost the items at the security due the rudeness.
They can upgrdae the scanning machines and allow the necessary medicines or oils. The rules are not made to stop carrying the necessary items but to avoid terrorist attacks.
The parameters of 100ml water or any liquid is allowed does not mean that above 100ml is all dangerous.
The CISF is not competitive authority to judge what to carry and what not.
They are just given the job because we do not have a alternative arranged security system.

The rule is a rule. If you dont like it, dont go thorough it, go walking.
Rule is total of 100 ml liquids may be allowed, that doesn't mean different stuff of 100 ml each.
It is also, if a cream is inside a 100 ml container and it is even half full, the container capacity is measured, not the quantity inside.

    Mr Ammigo ,
If one is terrorist or connected with or sympathizer of terrorist organisation, then national security forces need to eliminate them at any cost it may be direct encounter or fake!
These terrorists and their supporters are dangerous to our country either today or tomorrow, they are crooks in all aspect.
CISF is one of the most eminent security force in our country,

where the hell is Arnab goswami, who talks about VVIP racism.. here sunny thomas was doing just that!? if it was a minister then we wld have had to answer for 100 more days? this airport is disgusting- may be there is lot of gold Smuggling via this ariport and with help of airport insiders, without frisking! I am frequent traveller, and just the other day I was thinking, "Thank god for CISF, we have good, young capable, and fit and honest guys in this job"...if it was given to local govt, then probably all old men, with bald patch and protruded stomachs, and thakela attitude will be there and they will do simple roll calls and take bribes from shops inside airport and take hafta from those travel agent and prepaid taxi waalas placed inside the exit gate!... vhe vhe vhe

solution for this?: Lock up this airport indefinitely!.... deduct the salaries of all AAI staff, until they apologise and mend their ways and agree to daily frisking, no matter which level he is in!.. let people suffer for a while, but it is for greater good! arrest Sunny and put him in jail!

I agree with many here that we need to back CISF! Security rules have to be followed. Here it is reported as if the so called Thomas is the victim, though the CISF Jawan was at the receiving end. The fact that AAI staff Thomas pulled the Jawan's gun is not reported.

The story of India everywhere...ego problems, be it caste-based, or non-caste based happening everyday on our roads, airports, railway station, work place, neighbours! The CISF guy doing his job, might have been from minority community or lower caste community asking someone with massive ego problems to go thro' security check and triggered a fight between the two..

The Airport Security are sometimes very rude. they act as if they are the god. I had a bitter experience in Chennai airport when I was travelling with my wife. A lady officer acted so rudely with me when I was waiting for my wife after my screening. Her body language was such that, she really needed some kind of mental treatment instead of being in a duty with a arms in her hand. I am sure everyday lots of people would be facing the brunt.

This clash is unwanted and really degrade the standard of service in our airport to the public as well as speak so much ill about the lack of coordination with relative departments.
