Visit to Bangladesh will strengthen ties: Modi

New Delhi, Jun 6 (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said his two-day "historic" visit to Bangladesh will "strengthen ties" between the two countries.

In a tweet, Modi thanked Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for the warm welcome.

"Thank you PM Sheikh Hasina for the warm welcome. I look forward to a very good visit that will strengthen ties between India and Bangladesh," Modi tweeted.

Modi, who is on two-day visit to Bangladesh, arrived at Dhaka's Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in a special Indian Air Force (IAF) aircraft, Rajdoot.

He was received, in a break from protocol, by his Bangladeshi counterpart. He was accorded a ceremonial welcome, after which he inspected a guard of honour.

Posting a picture when he was received by Hasina at the airport, Modi tweeted: "Protocol broken to welcome a friend... PM Hasina welcomes PM to Dhaka and a historic visit begins."

In another tweet Modi said: "Hello Bangladesh. I bring with me the affection and goodwill of the people of India."

While leaving for the neighbouring country, he said: "Leaving for Bangladesh. This visit is going to strengthen the bond between our Nations, benefiting people of our countries and our region."

Modi also posted some of the tweets in Bengali.
