Congress legislators boycott Bengal assembly session

Kolkata, June 3 (IANS): Congress lawmakers on Wednesday boycotted the West Bengal Assembly session in protest against the ruling Trinamool Congress "carrying out attacks" against its party councillors for "unethically" forming the municipal board in West Midnapore's Kharagpur.

The Congress legislators staged a sit-in demonstration in the assembly lobby and raised slogans against the Trinamool.

The Kharagpur municipality board is set to be formed Thursday. The Congress and the Trinamool had won 11 seats each, while the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Left Front bagged seven and six seats respectively in the 35-member municipality which went to the hustings last month.

Amid complaints of intimidation, several opposition councillors have switched over to the Trinamool over the past few days.

Congress legislature party leader Moahammad Sohrab told media that the party legislators would meet on Thursday and bring the matter to the notice of Speaker Biman Banerjee.

The Congress members had staged a walk-out from the house on Wednesday after Banerjee turned down their demand for a discussion on the matter.
