CBI raids Delhi civic body offices in birth certificate scam

New Delhi, June 3 (IANS): The CBI on Wednesday conducted raids at North Delhi Municipal Corporation offices in connection with fraudulent issuance of birth certificates and recovered several incriminating documents.

A Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) team conducted the raids following information that large scale fraud in issuance of birth certificates was going on at the sub-registrar office of North Delhi Municipal Corporation.

"It was alleged that birth certificates were being issued by the North Delhi Municipal officials in connivance with touts by using unique SDM order number of any genuine applicant and issuing several birth certificates under the same SDM order number," a CBI official said.

It was also alleged that multiple birth certificates were being issued on the basis of the hospital records of any genuine applicant.

The central probe agency conducted raids at the office of registrar births and deaths, North Delhi Municipal Corporation office at Rajpur Road, Office of SDM Model town and headquarters of the civic body at Civic Centre in central Delhi.

"During searches, several instances were found that substantiated the allegations," said the official. "The CBI team collected several incriminating documents and is further examining the matter."
