Nestle India tests Maggi samples, says lead within safe limits

Jun 2 (PTI): Under fire over the Maggi issue, Nestle India has claimed that it got samples of the noodles tested in an external laboratory as well as in-house and the product has been found "safe to eat" with lead levels within the permissible levels for consumption. They also remarked that they regularly monitor all their raw materials for lead.

However, the company was silent on the presence of the taste enhancer monosodium glutamate (MSG) in their famous 'two-minute' noodles. Nestle India further said that it is "fully cooperating with the authorities who are conducting further tests and we are awaiting their results".

"We have also submitted samples of Maggi Noodles from almost 600 product batches to an external laboratory for independent analysis and we tested samples from almost 1,000 batches at our accredited laboratory," the company said in a statement.

These samples represent around 32 crore packets, as one batch comprises of about two lakh packs. All the results of these internal and external tests show that lead levels are well within the limits specified by food regulations and that Maggi noodles are safe to eat, it added. "We are sharing these results with the authorities," the company said.

Last month UP FSDA asked Nestle India to withdraw a batch of Maggi noodles "which were manufactured in February 2014" after it found high levels of added monosodium glutamate (MSG), a taste enhancer, in the noodles and lead beyond permissible limits.

While the company had earlier said that it does not add MSG to Maggi noodles, the UP Food regulator has rejected this claim.

Subsequently, a case has been lodged against the company in a local court at Barabanki over safety standards of Maggi, while actors Amitabh Bachchan, Madhuri Dixit and Preity Zinta were also separately dragged to court for promoting the 'two-minute' noodles brand.

Stating that consumers are concerned by reports that the authorities in Uttar Pradesh have found elevated levels of lead in a sample pack of Maggi noodles, the company said, "We are fully cooperating with the authorities who are conducting further tests and we are awaiting their results."

Kerala govt stops distribution of Maggi noodles

Thiruvananthapuram, Jun 2 (PTI): Kerala government today issued an order to temporarily stop distribution of Maggi noodles from over 1,000 retail outlets in the state in the wake of Uttar Pradesh FSDA finding monosodium glutamate and lead above permissible limits in the popular snack.

State Food and Civil Supplies Minister Anoop Jacob's office said an order had been issued to temporarily stop the distribution of Maggi noodles from its retail outlets in the state fortwith till the veracity of the dispute is resolved.

Kerala State Civil Supplies corporation, also known as Supplyco, has around 1,400 outlets throughout the state.

The Centre had made it clear yesterday that Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is testing more Maggi samples collected from different states following the detection of monosodium glutamate and lead in excess of the prescribed limit in the noodles.

A case had been lodged against Nestle India by state food regulator FSDA in a local court at Barabanki in Uttar Pradesh over safety standards of its Maggi, while actors Amitabh Bachchan, Madhuri Dixit and Preity Zinta have also been separately dragged to court for promoting the 'two-minute' noodles brand.

I wonder why Amitab, Madhuri & Preethi Zinta dragged to the court on this issue. If they are guilty, then all the TV channels also should be dragged to the court for telecasting the Maggie advertisement. However, whatever the qty available in stock should be distributed to all the Households at free of cost, instead putting into garbage. Now Babaramdev will say, Cow dung and cow urine is good for children's health than the Maggie.

    Well said Mr.
If Amithab, Madhuri and Preethi is guilty means all the models who is performing in advertisement are guilty as what ever says in advertisement is far from truth,
same way all the polititions are guilty as they same something before election and do opposite after election.

But this is India. Salman may be punished in animal killing case, but he will get bail in Human killing case.
common man will get years of punishment in 1000 Rs. theft case. but jayalalitha will get bail in crore of scam.
