Now, Uber driver tries to forcibly kiss customer

New Delhi, June 2, DHNS: Just six months after an MNC executive was reportedly raped by an Uber cab driver, another instance of sexual harassment by another driver of the app-based taxi service provider has surfaced in the capital.

A 21-year-old woman has alleged that her Uber driver tried to forcibly kiss and molest her aboard a cab driven from Delhi to Gurgaon.

The incident reportedly happened on May 29, when the woman, a professional dancer, was returning to her house in Gurgaon after a performance in Delhi.

Uber has suspended the driver, identified as Vinod, and is directly handling the matter with the victim.

Complaint filed

A police complaint has also been filed.

According to the her brother, she was not hurt and managed to save herself by pushing the driver away.

In a Facebook post to Uber, he wrote: “My sister availed your cab service last night for Gurgaon and your driver Vinod tried to kiss her forcibly and even after registering complaint with you morons there has been no action, no update from your end (sic).”

He demanded that Uber take action against the driver and not repeat the mistakes that the San Francisco-based firm made while handling the previous incident. “You people are pathetic, you still don't have any mechanism in place. What is making you people wait for so long? Looking for an escape mechanism? I am looking for immediate, non-mechanical, machine oriented revert. Get the culprit punished or you are in heaps of trouble for shielding him (sic),” he added.

Uber, in response, said it has a zero-tolerance policy towards inappropriate behaviour, and that immediate action was taken against the driver even while the matter was being thoroughly investigated.

“Our team immediately reached out to the rider via phone within minutes of receiving the feedback. Multiple members of the Uber team have spoken with the driver to ascertain the sequence of events,” Uber said.

Uber was banned and blacklisted by the Delhi Transport Department from providing transport service in the capital on December 8 last year after a 26-year-old MNC executive was allegedly raped by a cab driver employed without proper background checks.

Nineteen days after the incident, the Delhi Police had filed a charge sheet against driver Shiv Kumar Yadav. He was charged under Sections 376 (rape), 366 (kidnap), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 323 (causing hurt) of the Indian Penal Code.
