AAP attacks move to give absolute powers to LG

New Delhi, May 24 (IANS): Delhi's ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Sunday described as "unconstitutional" the central government's decision to give absolute powers in certain areas to Lt. Governor Najeeb Jung.

"The central government is shadow boxing," AAP leader and former minister Saurabh Bhardwaj told the media after a meeting of AAP legislators here.

"The notification that the central government has brought is not only unconstitutional, but it is against the basic principles of democracy," he added.

Added another AAP legislator Alka Lamba: "If the chief minister doesn't have a right to appoint and suspend officials, then how is an elected government of Delhi supposed to fight corrupt officials?"

A union home ministry notification issued on Friday granted supremacy to the Lt. Governor in matters pertaining to pubic order, police, land and services.
