Six police officers indicted over African-American's death

Washington, May 22 (IANS): Six police officers in Baltimore have been indicted for the death of an African-American man, a media report said Friday.

Freddie Gray, a 25-year-old black man died on April 19 due to a fatal spine injury that he suffered while he was in police custody. He was arrested on April 12.

Baltimore state prosecutor Marilyn Mosby announced the revised charges on Thursday, but the most serious charges, including second-degree murder, remained.

The six officers -- Caesar Goodson, William Porter, Lieutenant Brian Rice, Edward Nero, Sergeant Alicia White and Garrett Miller -- face charges and if convicted, could lead to decades in prison, based on their alleged actions that day, CNN reported.

The charges include illegal arrest, misconduct, assault and involuntary manslaughter.

Goodson, who drive the van used to transport Gray after his arrest, faces the most charges, and the most severe -- second-degree depraved heart murder.

"As our investigation has continued, additional information has been discovered, and as is often the case during an ongoing investigation, charges can and should be revised based upon the evidence," she said.

The officers are scheduled to be arraigned on July 2, prosecutor Mosby said.

Gray's death sparked protests and riots in the city.

After his funeral, riots broke out in sections of west Baltimore, prompting city and state officials to deploy thousands of extra law enforcement officers and National Guard troops to maintain peace and enact a citywide curfew.
